Grand Theft Auto - Image 1

Ah yes, it's another study on the many effects video games have on their players. Violence, sex, drugs, ...dog training, princess-making, and even baby-rearing; you name it, they've made a study out of it. Fact of the matter is, video games can influence you, one way or another. Now comes driving.

In New South Wales, Superintendent Dave Evans is asking why teenagers seem to be getting rowdy on the streets - breaking speed limits, DUI, and racking up other transgressions. Meanwhile, a study in Germany points out that men took more risks on the road than women, especially after driving in a video game.

What's the verdict? According to Evans, it has something to do with an increase in complacency, and the "indulgence in risk-taking behavior."

In games you race, you crash and it is a matter of pressing the buttons and off you go again. In real life it doesn't work that way, you can be killed.

I guess it does have some sense to it. I have, once or twice, had this vague notion that if all else goes wrong (say, I fail a huge test in school or something), I could just hit the reset button (or the shoulder buttons and Start + Select, in some RPGs) and simply re-load my life/file - ironic how both words are anagrams of each other. Wouldn't that be cool?

There's a 20% chance, after all, that our life is a computer simulation.

I don't understand why people are always look for something else to blame for why their kids weren't raised properly. Maybe if you'd teach your kids right from wrong and actually teach them how to drive properly then you wouldn't have this problem. You can't blame all of todays' kids problem on one thing. Maybe you should look in the mirror before you start blaming someone else. Mabe then we would actually be able to solve the real problem!

And by the way, racing has been around since TV's were black and white. So to blame the fact that alot of male kids are racing on video games is like blaming video games for the fact that male kids want to have sex because you are starting to see more sexuall behavior in video games. I bet that will be their next study!

» statistic will change no matter what..

video games or not, those statistics will eventually fluctuate no matter what.. who the hell thinks about gta4 when driving on the road anyways, i don't think anyone can afford to.

 » Huh?

WHAT are you talking about?! OF COURSE people think about things like GTA4 and NFS and whatever else... especially teenagers these days.

They're not taught how to respect the road and watch for other drivers. New drivers these days all feel that everyone ELSE should just look out for them.

Are you telling me that you don't think that some stupid kid with stupid parents is going to play some GTA4 and think to himself
"Hell, I could drive as good as Niko. Let's steal up Dad's car and see how fast that f*cker moves!"

If you don't believe this is possible, you have a horrendous streak of naievety that is just laughable.

Also, games like GTA and Need for Speed teach kids that running from the cops as they chase you will gain you points and make you look cool.

Have you even seen this generation of teenagers?! They're even more uncaring... yet even more spoiled than ANY OTHER generation I can think of. It's DISGUSTING!!

If you don't believe this is possible, you have a horrendous streak of naievety that is just laughable.

Don't give young drivers the benefit of the doubt. Although I'm aware that a lot of adults are disgusting drivers, the majority of accidents and mishaps (at least here in Canada) are caused by people between the ages of 16 and 21.

Source: Young Drivers of Canada

And don't try to hand me some crap about how these kids shouldn't even be playing these games since they're rated mature and such... they're going to be playing them anyways.

Of course people think about these things, but there's a difference between thinking and doing. Then there is also a difference between sane and insane human beings. You're normal sane video game playing person isn't going to go kill someone because they did it in a video game. Only someone with serious mental issues is gonna do that. Video games aren't going to influence normal people to imitate them in real life.

Thinking and doing are 2 different worlds! Because I think I'm the "Drift King" I can drift.
I'm not some amateurish driver in nfs I'M THE KING OF NFS

 » the nfs driving school

i don't think the cops are solely blaming the videogames for the deteriorating driving skills of teenagers. in fact, i think there is merit to this study.

much in the same way that you feel pumped up when you listen to rock music when you drive, or you're going on a more steady speed in the freeway when listening to.. oh, i don't know, dave matthews band, playing video games can also affect your mindset in driving.

i know i was an impressionable teen playing nfs underground. in fact, it had to take me a lot of conscious effort not to floor that pedal. still, it was tempting. very tempting.

so, yeah. the temptation to copy what we see videogames will always be there (though i doubt there'll be a lot who'll admit), but that doesn't make me any less of a sane or logical person. so i think it is highly plausible that these teen drivers' driving skills are influenced one way or another by the videogames they play/ movies they watch. highly plausible, not impossible.

 » F the police

Police will blame anything and anyone other than themselves.

IF police cared about safer roads, they wouldn't set up speed traps on the safest roads to catch more speeders and make more money.
IF police cared, they would punish UNSAFE driving rather than issue tickets for trivial offenses.
If police did anything effective (other than sit in a car and wait for speeders) I don't think over 37,000 people would be killed every year in accidents.

When the emphasis is on writing tickets and making money for the department, NOBODY will be safer. Now they blame videogames for their incompetence?

Police everywhere can go f*ck themselves.

 » Stupid

First of all, men have always taken more risks than women. They even use that in car commercials as a selling point. Why video games? Why don't they say anything about movies like fast and the furious? What about people that just have a passion for fast cars? How about they ban car and driver magazine? Take down the speed channel? This is just ridiculous. People drive how they drive no matter what games they're playing. Obviously a person isn't just going to crash into a wall and think it's okay and there will be no consequences. It's stupid to even think and more retarded to even say that. Also if they were remotely concerned about speeders, they wouldn't make cars that go in excess of 200mph!

You're dämn right! Crashing into a wall is a stupid thing to do...
I won't crash because "drifting" is a piece o' cake in nfs :P So does in real life!

And did you properly put your dog back into your pokeballs? I mean you can't leave them like this, it's abuse.
Also as I know pokemon can't die because they just faint. And you could heal them in the nearby pokecenter :D

You lil' dips.hits do get offended when it comes to > real life vs. gaming.

However I do agree teens do get a bad influence of those driving games like burnout, nfs or even gta. And maybe a little bit of 2f2f but thats it.
OMFG NITRO, NOS ÜBERBOOST... where do you think that these morons came from? "Tuning" their vehicles.

But I don't agree that the violence (reads killing) is influenced by gaming. It's caused by the people around the killer.

I mean, we just got rid of Jack Thompson!

Other studies actually show games improve you abillities:

Shooters and other reaction-based games obviously increase your abillity to make quick decisions.

Driving games increase your abillity to control the car and therefore you're driving becomes safer.

Puzzle games stimulates your logics.

Side-scrolling games and all of the DDR clones improves your timing.

All of above are obvious.
For those who think they're not obvoius, go back to school or something.

"Shooters and other reaction-based games obviously increase your abillity to make quick decisions."

Thus easier to make a decision to kill someone with an improved accuracy from gaming.

ok this is dumb, only a jackass would think a game or a movie or any stupid *****ing thing like that would make someone drive stupid, kill someone, or any stupid *****ing thing like that.

in other words... STFU YOU STUPID MOTHER *****ERS.

these people that say this ***** are just made cause they suck at the games...

 » ..

why dont the inventors of the car get blamed for making such a dangerous vehicle.

why do car manafacturers continue to keep making faster and faster cars? when they make fast cars who's going to buy them...old people so they can drive slow?

why are their companies in the world that make money off people crashing their cars...

its beneficial for the economy thats why. if no one crashes their cars how are the poor insurance companies supposed to make money

its the same if medicinal drugs actually WORKED WELL there would be no sick people..they would have no reason to make drugs..

these companies WANT people to crash and get sick etc so THEY can make money. They're obviously doing a good job too

before people go out blaming video games maybe they should have a look at the world and how this crazy society is being controlled..video games is the only freedom we will ever have

If it weren't for the fact that I am a card carrying member of the Insanity Club I would host my own findings on the talk show circuit.

I'm simply not going to go into this again, but find any of the back posts on this style of issue and you'll get a better understanding where I am cutting to...

I am under the suspicion that some lawyer is trying to get his client off on a technicality using the "video game made me do it" scenario.

You know, at one time when I was REALLY young, there was a catch phrase that preempted this whole phenomenon of "not my fault" cases. The phrase of the era was, "The devil made me do it."

If your nuts and you do something stupid, you should be terminated before you can spawn and do the world even less good. It's this kind of s***** feeding the 'stupid' that's going to be our society's undoing.

Like I said, short and sweet...
