GTA 4 - Image 1

There's been a lot of inquiries made lately about Grand Theft Auto 4 (Xbox 360, PlayStation 3)'s multiplayer mode and what types of games it will support. Among the hot topics is whether or not split-screen action will be available. The answer? Don't bet on it.

Stephen Totilo of the MTV Multiplayer blog has posted recently that the feature just isn't there. He says he learned of this from Rockstar Games itself as he played a Devkit version of the game via a local network in the developer's New York City office.

The blogger points out that limitations in hardware is a probable reason for the feature being omitted. He reasons that the sheer size of Liberty City being rendered split-screen may be a bit too much even with the hardware of the Xbox 360 and the PS3. He also points out that the feature seems less essential in an age when most people who'll be playing GTA 4 can easily have multiplayer action online.

Take-Two Interactive and Rockstar Games will launch GTA 4 come April 29th. The game has already gone gold and is touted as this year's biggest  software entertainment release.

I dun care who you are. I still feel that sitting down to one console, a few buddies, perhaps a few drinks and all playing a game on that console beats the f|_|CKing hell out of Online just about anyday and the Splitscreen in SA was the most fun I've had in just about any game.

--Deeply sad gamer.

 » Splitscreen?

SA never had splitscreen, It had 2 player modes but the screen never actually split lol. That doesn't mean GTA 4 won't have 2 player modes...

I think there will be co-op mode in GTA 4.
Go to http://rockstargames.com/IV/#?page=multiplayer
You see a list of multiplayer modes.
These ones are on the site: team, COOPERATIVE, competitive and race.
So why should R* put that on their website if there wont be cooperative mode??

 » btw

I also heard once co-op should be exclusive for ps3 version cause 360 wasnt strong enough to load twice the city (2 screens). So if that is right, maybe that guy got the 360 version and the ps3 version maybe will have co-op?

 » no split screen is a let-down...

@david891: You are not talking about the right thing. 1st: there is coop in GTA4, yes, but no, it's not split screen, that's what the topic is about. And second, the x360 is as powerfull as the ps3 so no, the ps3 won't have exclusive split screen. PS: The ps3 is faster on clock speed while the x360 have more RAM. Wich is better? With an install the ps3 can beat the x360 I'd say, but it'll be a long time before devs master it while the x360 is having a great time right now because it's simple to code on. PPS: I'm not an xbot, I have a ps3, but I'm still sad some great games are not on it (lost odyssey and tales of verseperia).

For the topic:
Having a friend playing with you is WAY better than any online options in the world. I mean, online, for me, is around the same as off-line in a way, since the others are the same as AI while the friend with you if WAY more fun to kill, lol. (especially if he can't stand loosing, lol). But still, GTA is always about single player, so it's not THAT bad, it's just sad.

 » still great game :)

Thanks for info, didnt saw the difference between split screen and cp-op, but now I see.
But I can imagine loading twice the whole city is way to much for a console. Load it all on 1 screen even causes little pop up and framedrops, so I can imagine what would happen if you load 2 worlds...

And I also have both ps3 and 360. But I know ps3 has more power, only no developper managed to get everyting out of it. About the ram, xbox doesnt really have more ram. XBOX has 512 mb for both video and system ram @700 mHz. + 10 mb extra video ram.
While the ps3 has 256 mb video ram @700 mHz + 256 mb system ram @3,2 gHz. So it only has 10 mb less, but it has way higher speed, so not much difference.

But am happy to see there is still co-op mode. Always fun to play with friends, hope you now can 2 vehicles (SA I found 1 way to enter 2nd vehicle with player 2, spawn 2 jetpacks and you can both enter it :)

» The hardware basically is powerful, however...

It appears it isn't enough for splitscreen, well no matter, since you would have to render two cities simultaneously and both have to be fully interactive with each player, even for the PC this is no easy task. Anyways, it doesn't really matter...i will get this game for PS3 probably, although I have the 360.
