Grand Theft Auto IV - Image 1While Microsoft has plans to keep the dough rolling by offering episodic downloadable content on Xbox Live this fall after Grand Theft Auto IV (Microsoft Xbox 360, Sony PlayStation 3) hits its console, one Sony bigwig doesn't seem fazed by being unable to do the same.

Scott Steinberg, Vice President of Product Marketing at Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA), told GameDaily in an interview:

I personally don't think there's going to be a huge percentage of folks who jump into downloadable content for another price when they're still playing through the core product.

Furthermore, Steinberg stated that "[Microsoft] spent the GNP of several small Latin American countries to get that [content]." Talking about Grand Theft Auto IV, He added:

...while I do think having that brand on their system was a move for them which they felt they needed to make because they cut a big check for it, I think PlayStation fans know the Grand Theft Auto experience on the PS2 is how they grew up playing Grand Theft Auto.

 » Sounds right

People are familiar with gta and ps2, so they will naturally think gta goes with PS3 and not the 360. Sony wins again.

Don't care how big a game is, DLC is never a bad thing. And I don't give a flying f*ck how much MS payed for it, so long as it doesn't make the price of the DLC outrageous.

Though it was funny, the GNP thing he pointed out. That gave me a laugh. MS definitely payed too much for the exclusivity

   Re: RexNox - 2008-03-29
 » /shrug

GTA4 has a online component...and then there's MGS4 and its online component...more than enough to keep PS3 users busy. And, PS3 owners don't have to pay any extra for it.

   Re: spicyhamster - 2008-03-29
 » @RexNox

there are a lot of things these days that ps3 owners dont have to pay extra for. *cough*live*cough* i wonder how much it all adds up to...

 » @Hammy

Do you mean is XBL worth it in the end? I don't know, but MS does an excellent job of giving straightforward information that leads to additional purchases. Sony has missed the boat in this area since day one.

XBL gold is $100/year I think. It's not expensive. However, my financial mind says, those are wasted dollars considering it increases the cost of the 360 by $100 a year which is silly considering you couldn't you could never recoup those lost dollars. At least, if you sold off games and the system, you'll get some money back...but, with XBL that money is lost forever. It's like a luxury's luxury.

Its $50 a year but yea i feel you

   Re: Master Chef - 2008-03-29
 » Yup, $50

And it does add up over time, I've had it about 6 years, so around $300 for Xbox Live, the price of a console. But all the fun I've had on it, it's worth it. I'd pay $100 per year for XBL if I had to, I love it that much

Honestly though. Even though the 360 version is clearly better why would Sony say it's better? Also the you misquoted him he said no one would buy it. Microsoft downgrades competition too it's called competition if the ps3 version had this exclusive content MS would be saying this instead of Sony.Downplaying competition success been happening since the beginning of time. Sony even still called the Wii a fad last year. Microsoft(xbox division) said Blu-Ray would be short lived. This episodic content will be great and it'll sell well. I agree that Sony is doing it's job attempting to downplay MS success.

MS wasted 50 mill on that content not exactly my idea of success when GTA 4 is going to be filled with tons of content anyway.

sorry mate, but until the game is released and gamers later see whats on offer for downloadable content, as well as game sales to compare, then and only then can anyone judge if the 50 million paid by microsoft was worth it or not. :-|

You're posting in the wrong thread. You're acting a little like Mister Common Sense, except he actually reads what the post is about.

Why are you bringing up the Wii? GTA IV has nothing to do with it at all.

 » hmm

In the end, if Sony wants to sell the point that PS3 version is better, then it'll come down to whether or not it's technically better. I personally don't imagine the DLC being all that significant if it's only going to be a few extra missions. A new island or something would definitely be worth taking a gander, though. But if what IGN said holds true, and the PS3 version has better AA while 360 version has(what I assume they implied as) better colors, then I'll pick better AA any day.

   Re: Games4James - 2008-03-29
 » nah

ign said the graphical differences are minor

http://uk.xbox360.ign.com/articles/855/855555p1.html

"The good news is that no matter which system you prefer, you're going to have a great-looking game to play. There are only some minor visual differences noticeable between the two preview versions. The 360 build is brighter and has slightly more vibrant color while the PS3 build has less aliasing issues. Both display a solid, consistent framerate even during scenes with heavy pedestrian traffic and wild explosions. While graphics whores will find subtle differences to nitpick, the average Joe is going to be happy with either version."

from gta day one (i was probly too young to play an 18 then but i got the game) i had it on playstation right through to vice city stories i had on playstation i am a bit brand loyal when it comes to things like this so regardless of dlc i will be getting it on ps3. i do own an xbox 360 and thought about getting it on it for the dlc but since i have allways played it on playstation i thought i would keep it going. i know loads of my friends are doing the same

   Re: spicyhamster - 2008-03-29

same with dmc4. my friend actually sold his 360 to buy a ps3 so he could play it. a little overboard, i know, but that's how important it was to him.

 » Console war.

This Sony guy and this article is just begging for a console war to happen right about now...

And Yes, GTA fans have grown up playing GTA on their PS2s but that was before the ps3's sixaxis controller came rolling out...

DLC is more than necessary because Some GTA fans would like the game to live even more past core package..

   Re: Jin Wu - 2008-03-29
 » Ridiculous

DLC is another marketing tool that us americans clamor for like the 360's "free" 3 year warranty on something that should be working the day I bought it.

The vast majority of people who buy GTA games DON'T finish it. This has been major news since Vice City. I guess if you get all your news from marketing ads you wouldn't know the difference.

More missions? For what? After 40 hours of gameplay if you're clamoring for more GTA, get a life!

There's too many good games coming out this year to be playing GTA for the next year or more. That is if you own a PS3. If you're only on a 360, then I guess that DLC is looking pretty good right now.

MGS4 is just the first flow of water from the breaking dam of PS3 exclusive titles coming the rest of this year.

So, please, continue being proud of being the product of a marketing tool and wait for your DLC to show up next year. And don't tell me you know the DLC wasn't coming out till next year?

And how many PS3 games do you think will have come out and made me forget about freaking GTA by next March?

People are proud of the dumbest things!
   by Kingofdaberbz - 2008-03-29
 » @Jin Wu

That was the biggest Sony fanboy comment I read this year.
I can understand you don't own a 360 so you can't get the episodic content even if you wanted it. Also, news flash not EVERYONE wants MGS4 not saying it's good or bad,but that game only appeals to hardcore gamers not that it's a bad thing. Obviously most people who GTA and own a 360 or want the episodic content will get that version. Also, who said we're being proud? I'm happy I have an OPTION of getting dlc. Also, it's coming out THIS YEAR. Actually, it's going to be in the fall. and if the dlc is a new island I would be happy and proud of that. Who wouldn't be happy about buying GTA3 then getting GTA VC 5 months later as an exclusive? The ps3 is getting good games, but fans who love the franchise will get this DLC and I'm positive if this is revealed to be an island it would definitely boost 360 sales. If I was you I would just be honest and say it's too bad I can get this dlc,but at least I have other kewl games to get this year. DLC is cool, but if you don't have the console who cares?

   by scarface_tha_second - 2008-03-29
 » Everyone is jumping overboard.

I own all three consoles and will buy GTA IV for PS3. I'm like a lot of people, I've gotten used to my Grand Theft Auto experience on PlayStation all the way back from PSONE.

At the same time, while I understand that most people do not actually get around to finishing GTA, I don't see how anybody can say that extras are a bad thing. I'm actually kind of cheesed out that the PS3 wont get the dlc. It's not enough for me to buy the game for 360, but I can see where the Xbox crowd is coming from on this one.

But I really don't think that the investment was exactly necessary for Microsoft. 50 million dollars (or at least I think it was around this much) just for dlc exclusivity? This better be the best downloadable content ever. Who knows, maybe we will see this stuff on the PS3 version, just with a really big delay.

I really don't see the big deal since this will not change the fact that PS3 will dominate this year with better games. I agree with a lot of things that you mentioned, Kingofdaberbz, but I have a problem with two of your statements:

The first comes from the fact that I am a die-hard GTA fan. Along with FF10 and MGS2, GTA II is easily the only reason I invested in a PS2 as early as I did. You're right, an extra island would be *****ing fun. I would not be surprised if it actually is a part of what they are planning. But it will not be enough to make me, another die-hard GTA fan like yourself, change the experience from PlayStation to Xbox. I don't know, its just something about the feel. I know a couple of people like myself that own both consoles and think the same way that I do. I may be wrong about this, but I think it is really a matter of preference.

The second is the real problem I have with what you said. Your comment about not "everyone" wanting MGS4 made me laugh. Anybody who is physically and mentally capable of playing MGS4 and has a PS3 will get it. In my opinion, owning a PS3 and not getting MGS4 this year is *****ing retarded. Your statement makes me think you must really have something personal against Snake because you are shunning a game that is probably 2008's best exclusive (among all three consoles).

Back to GTAIV. What I am trying to say is that people have got to stop arguing about which version of the game will be better and have the cooler content/graphics. GTAIV will be the *****. Period. It doesn't matter which console you play it on. Either way you will spend the first 3 hours with your jaws dropped to the floor. It will be a great game that more people will now have the opportunity to play at the same time. This is probably one of the only things that 360 and PS3 supporters should have common grounds on. You guys, on the other hand, have somehow found a way to flam each other about it.

have the chance to play downloadable content for GTAIV which can't be experienced anywhere else?

or

would you rather have the chance to be swapping disk between GTAIV, MGS4, and GT5P, three of the biggest franchises in gaming, within the next month or two which can't be experienced anywhere else?

   Re: Kingofdaberbz - 2008-03-29
 » @ Quixand

Wow you sure are an idiot. When was GTA4 on multiple discs? I could of sworn it was on 1? even if MGS4 came on 360 two discs wouldn't be bad at all.
Also, GT5P is a demo so I couldn't careless. If you only own a ps3 get GTA4 on that if you only have a 360 get it on that. If you own both get the 360 version if you want the same game on the 360 +
episodic content.

I could care less if I get episodic content for GTA4. All I could say is that I could play multiplayer on GTA4 as well as many other will be successful games comming out like GT5P, Motorstorm 2, and Resistance 2, for free, on the ps3 which to me beats paying for extra download content for only 1 game + paying for xbox live. Why would an average gamer pay for more content if he/she didnt even finish it in the first place. 40 hours is a lot for 1 game

   Re: Master Chef - 2008-03-29
 » Or

You could just not be poor and buy both consoles, play MGS4 and GT on your PS and play GTA + DLC on your 360

I think that beats both things you listed

   Re: Quixand - 2008-03-30
 » OMG!!!

King your stupidity amazes me!!! dang you're a moron!!!!

the first option was for 360 owners... u know GTA dlc content???

the second was for ps3 owners... u know swapping disk between GTAIV, MGS4, and GT5P??? because all those games can only be played on the PS3??? you are so freakin stupid... from the get go when u said u have xmb on ur xbox everybody should have known nothing of sense will come from you...

idiot.

 » why post this?

Anyway, Rockstar devs said the ps3 will get episodic content too so sony should try to stop those lines. Still, the ps3 will have different episodic. I hope hope it'll be as good.

   by Kingofdaberbz - 2008-03-29
 » @dragonracer900 & platon

Don't need to be so jealous. I don't even pay for xbl gold I get it for free(codes) so I'm also playing GTA online for free. I'll also being playing GeoW 2,FABLE 2,Banjo,Ninja Gaiden 2 and Halo Wars on xbl as well for free. I'll also enjoy my episodic content. It's said from MS they'll be expansions not missions that means basically a new Island, etc. R* didn't confirm it yet. It would most likely be staten island or Phila if their add dlc as massive as that. @platon the ps3 is getting DLC not episodic content and the stuff the ps3 receive will also be on 360 and that stuff will come after R* is done with the exclusive stuff with MS which should be around March 09'

   Re: dragonracer900 - 2008-03-29
» You stated a good argument

But.... It seems like a hassle to constantly search for free codes to play online.

Yes I can agree with you that a new island will be the content that will be released for only the xbox360, but I bet you will agree that many gamers wont buy the content because they would play the other games at the same time and probably wouldnt be finished with GTA by the time those games will come out. It all about a players preference and comfort with a system/game, some will buy the content and some wont.

And Yes Banjo, Fable, GeoW2, and the other games u mention are some good games that many, including myself would like to play.

 » Here's another view...

I'm an "average" mature (mostly :P), 28 year old male. I have a car/house/bills to worry about. I have a job I go to. I have a beautiful girlfriend that I'm with. I have my troubles, but things are all around good. I have a PS3 and a Wii. I will never own a Microsoft product. However, it's not because I'm a "fanboi", it's because I really don't like Microsofts' business tactics, but that's another story/debate.

The reason I'm posting is because, even though I despise the company Microsoft (and I loathe them...really, it burns inside), I believe I am a rational person. Microsoft has done the right thing with this.

Here's the cut and dry. You pay 59.99-89.99 for GTAIV.

On one system, the PS3, you get the game, that's it, nothing more, nothing less. Do you get a better game ? No, it's fairly equal (according to the devs). Did they do the primary development on this system ? No, they didn't. Anything special ? Nothing that I can see....yet

Now, on the other system, you get.... the game (which primary development was done on), the promise of downloadable content, you get Achievements (whether you like them or not), you get a much broader online experience, you get a larger install base to play multiplayer with, you have the option of listening to your own music (even if the game doesn't allow custom soundtracks)...overall the current experience appears to be more complete.

If you only own one of the systems, it's pretty much read which game version you would buy. However, if you own both consoles (PS3 and 360), then my guess is, that for the most part, people will buy the 360 version over the PS3. This is the way it has gone for most of the games that have seen multi-platform releases. Do I know a single person who bought Devil May Cry 4 for the PS3 if they own both systems ? Nope, can't say that I do. This is the way it's been with every game until this point. At least in my circles and with the majority I see posted online (however much that holds up).

If it came out for the Wii....with extra stuff (I know, I know, it wouldn't happen, but bear with me for the analogy), I'd buy the Wii version and forgo the graphical difference because of the CONTENT.

Are these things important to me ? Yes they are. Why ? Because I like the idea that my game has some longevity. I like the idea that in a years time, when I've "worn" out the game, there's the chance it can become fresh again. I like it because there is more, and more is always better. Are they important to most ? It would also appear so.

Oh, and I have played San Andres, and it wasn't enough for me :P

Many of you will argue that Sony will have these things. Well, that's just great for Sony...woulda, coulda, shoulda...it doesn't matter, it's not here now, and to be honest....I don't see it coming anytime soon. The trophy system ? Nope not any time soon....the Sony version of "achievements" ? Yep, don't expect that anytime soon either. Oh yeah, and the in-game XMB....it's coming this year....maybe in November/December of this year...and that's if they can keep their schedule, which, if I know Sony, they can't.

Also, the problem that I find with all of the exclusives that are mentioned (like Final Fantasy, or Metal Gear, Gran Turismo 5, etc) they are all old, worn game series. I'm done with Final Fantasy 34 and Metal Gear has changed so drastically since the PSOne, it's no longer fun, it's not the same game I fell in love with...same name, not same game. And GT5 is just a driving game...a very pretty, very awesome simulation, but still....just a driving game. Other "exclusives"(like Resistance or Rachet) are First/Second party...of course they're exclusive, sheesh. But what about games that are new, fresh, getting killer reviews and from multi-platform companies ? Bioshock, I'm looking at you there. Dead Rising ? Lost Odyssey? PS3 owners get shabby ports of pre-existing games that have been out for a year(s) (Lost Planet anyone ?)....or we get shabby ports of sequels to games that have been out for a ye
