Sam Fisher vs... Bill Gates? - Image 1

Sorry to stir things up a bit, but everyone and their pink prancing hippo probably already know that PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 side-by-side comparisons are a fact of life these days. Previously, we've had graphical comparisons of Armored Core, Elder Scrolls, and Virtua Tennis, and some time before that, comparisons of Tiger Woods and Tony Hawk.

Today, Sam Fisher's getting the same treatment, but this time around, as seen in pictures (instead of vids). From The Back Buffer (Blogspot), we got comparison shots of the PS3- and 360-versions of Splinter Cell: Double Agent. Quite aptly so, we just might finally see the true meaning of his being a "double agent."

Now, now. Before you guys go at each other's throats, here's a very intelligent comment by Anonymous we found on the Blogspot post, saying that he/she won't decide on either an Xbox 360 or PS3 purchase based on these screenshots because of the following:
  1. are those screenshots captured directly from the system or from physical digital camera?
  2. are those screenshots from the same display output?
  3. I may question the game developer's capabilities of getting the most from both systems.
  4. I will decide my purchase based on screenshots from Gran Turismo for Xbox360 and PS3.
Opinions are opinions; everyone's entitled with their own. And as always, the main difference between both consoles is the lighting. Now, to make things fun, we'll make you guess which side of these shots are running on which platform. If you want to cheat just highlight the following censor bars: Xbox 360, right-hand side; PS3, left-hand side.

but the 360 has less smoke hiding the things in the background (which im guessing is from it having more memory) and the 360's is bluer (not really sure why this is). its really hard to tell which is more detailed.

this is the most stupid of all of the comparisons.
inaccurate in every way. these screenshots does not represent either of the systems gfx/display capabilities.

» ^^^Who said it was a system comparison?

This is a comparison of Splinter Cell ON THE 360 and PS3, no-one said its a comparison of the 360 and the PS3 consoles.

And how is it inaccurate? That IS how the game looks on both systems, and if you had IGN insider access, you could download the head-to-head movie these screenshots are taken from and see it for yourself.

I have a PS3 and I know Xbox360 graphics aren't that bad. This is just plain lame comparison. Also, if the developers aren't using the full potential (ie: reusing old bitmaps) of each system (which I suspece they aren't), it's just foolish to compare.

The 360 looks better when it comes to Sam Fisher being shown without night vision...

night vision looks liek crap on the 360 side for some reason.

 » WOW

the ps3's SPDA looks pretty disapointing as compared to the 360's, look at the detail on the flag of the guys shirt sleeve, and look at the texture and detail in the finger nails and the ways sams face seems to shine with sweat and his hair stubble stands out , even the walls in the background seem to have more fine detail on the 360 than on the ps3

I will say that I have SPDA on the 360 and know how it looks in 720p, but after seeing how it looks on a ps3 im really really disapointed, it looks as though they didnt really try, sad...at this point I wouldnt take a ps3 if people were giving them away for free

 » STFU

hey buddy shut the ***** up because i have SPDA on PS3 and it looks nothing like that on it. it looks better then the 360 because me and my friend both hooked up our systems he has 360 and we did a side by side on my 1080p 50inch tv in a split screen view and my PS3 looked way better obviously this is ps2 becasue ive played it on ps2 and thats how it looks. So before you go just posting ***** like that why dont you own both systems and do a little test for yourself because until you do SHUT UP. these are obviously done by microsoft to make ps3 look bad. its not fooling me.

now... i'm not really a fan of the series but i was actually planning to get this one to actually experience what SC is all about(haven't played the prev. titles either... and yes i know it's a stealth game) in good HD glory :)

i thought if bethesda could port oblivion at such quality to the PS3 then why not ubisoft.... but i guess i wrong

 » ps3

i thought the ps3's looked way better than the 360's. PS3's shading is more subtle. 360's is just bam, straight at you as it changes shadows. this is especially evident in image 13. I just think the ps3's SPU's can do stuff like mist and shadow better cause it can have an SPU specifically for those things like they do with rain in Formula 1 racing

 » WRONG!!

you gays... sorry, guys

WWTF?? what kinda crack are you guys smoking? The right IS THE PS3, not 360. It has the hallmarks of PS3, the light only PS3 does that. Check ALL other comparisons Xbox 360 can never achieve the type of light of PS3.

They say right left in mirror image because behind the screen the Xbox is right and PS3 is left.

I can't believe Y' ALL got it wrong.

   Re: Nerd (Unregistered) - 2007-04-11
 » .

QJ say PS3 is on the left side - 360 on the right...that isnt tru for all of the images. whereever the lighter image is..thats PS3.

i have the ps3 version, and when underwater it is NOT so dark that you cant see anything. that underwater pic with the bubbles has the PS3 to the right, where you can actually see what you're doing. i have heard from reviews that the 360's version is very dark, and even the darkness of underwater was commented on.

like i said, whereever the lighter image is, thats a ps3 screenshot

pro-g.co.uk weren't so friendly about the PS3 shortfalls.

"So, everything is very much as it is in the Xbox 360 release, but in terms of presentation this PlayStation 3 version is severely under par. Whereas the Xbox 360 game often dazzled with impressive lighting and a solid frame rate, the PS3 game chugs frequently and seems to be missing much of the subtle lighting that impressed so much last year. What's more, numerous sound effect glitches crop up throughout and cutscenes fail to run smoothly. It's all rather sloppy and lessens the experience substantially."

 » huh

why do we need to argue about these pics... i guess we all know that this isn't really reliable... left-right right-left... it doesn't matter... it not's going to look like that (the left pic) for either the 360 and the PS3... we all know both are better than that... as LiquidZ3ro said we can only decide when we actually see it on the consoles... i'm not going to believe these pics... never have (with previous comparisons) and never will.

i've only had my PS3 for three weeks (just launched here in Sydney) and i've already bought 7 games since getting it (Resistance, Motorstorm, Ridge Racer, F1, Marvel Ultimate, VIrtua Tennis, and NHL2k7... i'll be getting NBA2K7 this thurday plus a couple of downloads like GT HD Concept, Tekken DR, and even that Rub a Dub)... and i've got my PS3 connected thru HDMI to my Bravia... and none of them games are like this... they all look magnificent... no way I'm going to believe that THAT pic up there will be what a game would look like on a PS3.

   by VgSlag - 2007-04-11
 » From IGN

From IGN:

Double Agent's gameplay relies on deep blacks and the lighting on PS3 came off as less dynamic in many areas.

It's a trade off. When Sam first drops into the water on 360 it's difficult to get your bearings and figure out the correct direction to swim.

However on PS3 you'll switch to night vision less often because there seems to be plenty of ambient light even in the "dark" areas.

The PS3 versions is lacking some small details present on 360. For example when we first enter Sam's prison cell there is a chessboard on the ground and some scattered belongings next to his bed. These aren't included on PS3.

There are also a few less background characters in the prison and different fire effects.

Although the PS3 version doesn't look as bad on an HDTV as in the shots above, it is indeed a very bad port. Compared to other games like Resistance FOM and the frame rate is very choppy dropping under 10fps at times :/ The PS3 doesn't deserve such junk. Just stay away from that game (not from the PS3 ;), or get it on a 360.

   Re: Nerd (Unregistered) - 2007-04-11
 » .

although the framerate is rather bad...i have heard the 360 version also has a bad framerate and that its worse in places, and theres even tearing of the screen in places.

   Re: Squid (Unregistered) - 2007-04-11
 » I didn't notice any

I rented it last weekend for the 360, and I didn't notice any framerate problems atall.
You gotta realize that the 360 is running 720p not 1080p. The 360 has better framerates in basicly all the multiplatform games.

Although, since the 360 got patched for 1080p a few of the newer games are developed in 1080p. (i.e. Armored Core 4)

   Re: Nihil (Unregistered) - 2007-04-14

Tearing is actually caused by lack of synchronization between the graphics card and the display- it's not the game or the system's fault.

i had this on ps3 and my friend has this on 360 and i agree it looks better on 360 and i blame it on when it was ported over, for some reason game play on the PS3 isn't smooth but rather choppy, the 3d camera seems to lag and when i finished the game it sucked anyway so i returned it, but yea id say who ever ported it from 360 to ps3 just didn't do it the way right way to run well on a PS3.

Just look at that first pic, with the NPC being held hostage, 360 looks a thousand times better than the PS3 shot. And once again, lighting is superior on the 360 version, it's brighter where it should be brighter and darker where it should be darker.

Either developers are getting lazier or the Cell really is just that hard to code for, and methinks it's the former
