Grand Theft Auto 4 - Image 1Now that Grand Theft Auto 4 (Microsoft Xbox 360, Sony PlayStation 3) has gone gold, Rockstar Games president Sam Houser was able to sit down and talk about the hurdles his company had to overcome. This time, he pointed out the Xbox 360's storage capacity which isn't a big leap from previous systems.

"They don't have a significantly larger storage medium than the previous systems," Houser told 1UP when talking about the 360. "It's a slightly bigger DVD disc," he added.

Meanwhile, having Xbox 360 consoles in the market with no hard drives also came up. Houser explained:

I think that the 360 is going to have to get 'round this issue we're talking about. I can think of various ways they can do it. Hopefully, they're going to adopt one of those in the next year or so, because it's going to become more of an issue.

If we're filling up the disc right now, where are we going? It's not like our games are going to get any smaller. I think that issue's on the table with a bunch of games right now. I'm sure they'll come through with an intelligent solution.

On a positive note, Houser noted that the "360 is a very, very accessible, familiar, effective environment to work in." There's also no need to worry about storage limitations for now, since both versions of Grand Theft Auto 4 "pretty much look identical side by side."

Houser admitted that developing for the PS3 was "challenging," but Rockstar North managed to learn what's necessary to create games for the powerful machine. "I don't want to say we've cracked it, but we've got comfortable with it -- we know we can make our games."

Maybe he should take notes from Hideo Kojima who claims he already used the Cell engine to its limit.

 » well

For now the 360's storage limitations aren't a big deal. It's just making developers work a little harder, which they have to do with the PS3 anyway.

... but the Pro 20gig HDD was/is (has always been) in-adequate. I was surprised when on day 1, that 20gigs was cut down to 12-13 after the software install. But, unfortunately the upgrade 120gig HDD is way over priced. If every game is gonna have a OPTIMAL PERFORMANCE downloads, DLC, random patches... AND if Microsoft wants 360 users to get into the Digital Download age, then they're gonna be raking in the $$$ when people realize they must fork over $180 for 120gigs that should really have been the minimum.

DVD9 is too small... but GTAIV is less than 7 gigs so STFU Houser.

They should of do bigger storage than 20GB. Like have acarde 20gb. pre 50gb and elite the same.

» exactly! - Arcade 20GB should be absolute minimum by now; obvious reduction in price...?

But i never trust MS on careful decision making.

"We want our consoles stripped down as much as possible to be most affordable" - ok decision in terms of adaptability without takin into account the loss in potential.

"We also want our users to have access to massively available content, in order to make some/lots of money." Both decisions cannot be compatible especially after a hddless console, the most adaptable console only having 20gb/15gb and upgrade being a ripoff.

You win some, you lose some.
But MS is always after a win win money money

sacrifices should have been made and im damn glad the 20gb ps3 never saw the daylight in Europe

 » 20gig

I love my (former) 20 gig ps3, I had an 80 gig sata 2.5" lying around so i just popped it in it when I bought it. My wireless router sucks for gaming so i plug in anyways, and USB memory stick readers work on the 20 gig.

20gig USA > EU's PS3's because my 20 gig has the emotion it it, which I believe was removed for all European consoles and subsequently every new PS3.
