John Lydon, known as Johnny Rotten by anyone who's remotely familiar with the legendary band Sex Pistols, was invited to Activision's Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock (Sony PlayStation 3, Microsoft Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii, PC) launch party. But instead of promoting the game like he was asked to do, the English vocalist opted to belittle Guitar Hero and talk about other things instead. While racking up points on that swear count, no less.

To kick things off, Johnny started by saying he just took the offer and played the game with kids. A few sarcastic remarks soon after, he told everyone that "what I like is it weren't teaching you how to be a rock star, it was teaching you how not to be a rock star."

Johnny called Guitar Hero III a joke, then went on to rant about journalists and even Tony Blair. It's hard to tell what he intended to do, but it sure didn't seem like he was there to get more copies of the game off shelves. Find highlights of the launch party in the video below.

 » He's right!

People should spend more time playing real guitars, riding skateboards and playing sports.
It's more rewarding to actually do something than it is to simulate it.
I love video games and I've played them since I was a child (I'm 26 now), but we shouldn't allow simulations replace real activities.

 » Agreed

I LOVE video games and guitar hero BUT all of u should pick up a real guitar and learn how to play instead of simulating it and pretending. Quit Wasting ur time and become a real guitar hero

   Re: GW2 - 2007-11-28
» speaking as someone who jsut plays on medium

i just play it to play a few songs every now and then. but some people play on expert and hit every damn note and i dont see why. i can do hard but i dont see the point. ive already beaten all the songs on medium and im done now. ill play for fun every so often inbetween COD4 sessions.

   Re: jrm125 - 2007-11-29
 » you're missing the point

All it is is a game. It's not replacing the real activity, most people playing it wouldnt be sitting around with a guitar anyway. If anything it's just supplanting the time you'd otherwise be playing CoD4 or Halo or any of the other myriad of games we play.

The popularity of GH3 is based out of the fact it has real songs people love, an innovative input system, and is actually a game people can continuously practice and master.

If you truly believe people play GH3 in place of actually learning a guitar, you're a complete fool.

 » wow

ok now i get it ! u got it your the man m_babble i think you just save my life i was wasting it for sure....now instead of playing hangar 18 smoothly on medium i will play it for real with all the notes on a real guitar which does not come with a drum, a bass, a singer, a drummer and a basist.....and by so... ill now steal real cars and kill real people since im a GTA fan..... cmon i hope you know you are RETARDED.... smile !

I hate people who say "You should go spend your money and time on learning real guitar" Well what if some of us could care less about playing real guitar and find Guitar Hero more fun? It's cheaper and even if I learned how to play guitar I'd have no use for the skill.
Also it's not like people who play Guitar Hero do to simulate/pretend playing a real guitar you do it simply because it's fun. Do you tell people who play Flight Simulator to go fly a real plane? Or using GW2 as an example, why not go an join the army and have real firefights?

 » yep

EXACTLY. i was gonna type all of that but you said it perfectly..

   Re: Neuromancer - 2007-11-29
 » Correct

And the real point here is simple: if he didn't want to promote the game like he was PAID to do, he shouldn't have accepted the job. Nobody cares why Rotten hasn't been an important figure in music for the past 20 years, or about how he "IS" England!!! Give it up, crawl into your coffin and spare us the attitude.

 » Lydon stays true

33 years ago the local British TV invited the pistols to a live interview and he was the same then. The pistols were at the front of the Punk revolution and were always outspoken. That nobody learnt from the original interview (where people got fired) and asked him for the release of Guitar Hero is the Classic balls up. Even Donkeys only bash their heads once.
All I can say is 1up to Lydon and bollocks to the System that thought that they could tame him to be a marketing puppet.

» Yes..a damn waste of time

I agree with him that GH is a joke.I really don't get why it's so damn popular.I suppose its kinda like kareoke with a guitar..but its not a real guitar!!!..its a toy with colorful buttons on it.Why don't they make a game where you play with a real guitar with chords..It will be alot harder but atleast you will learn to play for real.

   Re: skidz - 2007-11-29
 » Not everyone can learn

I have been trying to learn real guitar for about a year now and I still suck hard. Cant play anything without fault. Saying that people should learn real guitar is a ridiculous argument. You should understand that not everyone can learn. I know this guy that has played as long as I have and hes playing Van Halens Eruption already. Obviously, not everyone can get good. We are all different and some of us will never pick it up.
As for Guitar hero, its just a game. Nobody thinks its anything like real guitar, only the people that play real guitar and are jealous for some reason.

 » Nothing wrong with GH

If you say playing Guitar Hero is a waste of time because you should learn to play real guitar, you're an idiot.

I play guitar and I love Guitar Hero. Tom Morello plays Guitar Hero.. and I guarantee he's a better Guitar player than you are.

Tony Hawk plays Tony Hawk games.

Football players play Madden games.

You're just an idiot.

   Re: shabghai360 - 2007-11-29
» you are both right and both wrong

Great guitarist play along with the marketing as it helps them and their record sales. OK this is not wrong. The game is for fun and many enjoy it. This is good and not wrong.
What is wrong and this is where Lydon flips is that its marketing in away to make you believe you are playing guitar with the greats, this is incorrect. That he took the money and mouthed off is all credit to Lydon. This game is about having fun but not about playing guitar as is often sublimely portrayed.

» Johnny Rotten has done a LOT of drugs

Was Guitar Hero ever meant to turn people into rock stars? I thought it was just supposed to be fun.

People are uptight morons.

» In America, It's Soccer, Not Football

Don't be so ignorant, even if you're European. In AMERICA the game is called soccer, and soccer players play Fifa, while FOOTBALL players play Madden. YOUR football is OUR soccer. Even though I'm Nigerian and not American born, your ignorance still hurts :D

Say you're English. Does an American get mad at you for calling a truck a "lorry"? No, because that would be stupid, since it's what people in YOUR country call it. Don't be so dense, damn Europeans.

 » umm

football was here before american football, rugby was here before american football and why do they call it football anyway, which sport uses the foot more to actually play??? american football comes from football and rugby so why change the name to football when it is clearly not football

   Re: Ash735 - 2007-11-30
 » Football

Was around before American Football, so Europe guys have the right to call it football. YOU'RE the ignorant one, thinking we should all obey American terms and American-English. Do some *****ing research first, prick.
