PS3 vs Xbox 360 - Image 1The battle for console supremacy rages on. Microsoft and Sony still are at it, going head to head with each other, from game exclusives to console interface, and things just get more heated at the Tokyo Game Show 2008.

Microsoft has revealed their update to their interface, the "New Xbox Experience", where gamers will have the capability to create their animated avatars as well as get new community features. Not surprisingly, this is in direct competition with Sony's much-talked about PlayStation Home.

Even their launch dates are no coincidence, so it seems. Microsoft has pegged a launch date of November 19 for the NXE, while Sony, through its US President, Jack Tretton, has also confirmed that Home will be debuting in the same month. No exact date was given, however.

Delving further into the groundbreaking experience that users will have with Home, Tretton says:

It is a jaw-dropping experience. You become a part of a living community with an avatar you can customise and your own 3D apartment, it's a world unlike everything you've ever seen. I think it will be another part of our ecosystem, adding social networking and a connective tissue to the experience.

Tretton also expressed confidence with Sony's standing in the ongoing console wars:

Gamers are coming back to us, we are selling a higher percentage of games such as Madden NFL (09 Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PSP, Wii, and DS) for and Grand Theft Auto (Xbox 360, PS3), because people are choosing the PS3 [over the Xbox]. Sales are up over 100 per cent and we are tracking well ahead of what we expected. We are having success in multiple markets and, coming up to the second anniversary of the PS3, we are right where we want to be.

Actually, I'd have to say I'm glad such healthy competition exists between these two giants. After all, by aiming to be the best, it is we the consumers who benefit the most from it with good products and services.

 » Lol Home

"Unlike anything you've ever seen before." ahem Second Life anyone? And I must say as a PS3 owner I don't care about Home. We were supposed to have it at launch and here it is two years later, and there's still nothing just the promise which is all that Sony has been giving us lately promises.

   Re: Eclipze_ - 2008-10-09
 » ?

Second life isn't even close to Home at all.. Second life: really bad graphics, crazy looking clothing that should not even be allowed, and you can fly...... Don't exactly see the similarity in that and Home, a social network for ps3 gamers. Its like saying two First Person Shooters are alike because their in first person. So yeah, I don't understand how you put that together.. But me, as a ps3 owner, I see the difference between the two things your trying to say are the same.

"We were supposed to have it at launch and here it is two years later, and there's still nothing just the promise which is all that Sony has been giving us lately promises."

Your totally wrong on one point you made there. We weren't "supposed" to get this at launch, don't even know where you got that from. Your right that there is only a promise at the moment that we have to ride on, but thats a good thing. We at least know that the open beta (allowing anyone who wants home to get it) is coming this year. The release window is this year which I think is good enough for most around here.

You see I'm not impatient at all because I've actually been playing the games that have been releasing instead of complaining about how we don't have Home already. Now with just less than two more months of waiting you still complain? Please go learn to have some patients...

   Re: F34RM3 - 2008-10-10
 » So?

The fact that it's also a social network, which allows you to customize a living place, a person and etc but because of the minor differences in clothing, the ability to fly, and graphics clearly make it radically different. Actually Home which has been in development since 05 which was going to be for the PS2 initially but was never finished before the end of the PS2's lifespan, and thus was being coded for the PS3 both Phil Harrison and Kaz Hari said it would be available at launch with the PS3. Along with the PSN Sony's mediocre online service but was delayed due to technical problems. And as stated I don't give a damn about Home seriously I wish people wouldn't put words in my mouth but that's the internet. I'm not being impatient I'm just sick of Sony and their promises and BS. Oh btw supposed as you seem not to understand is a word http://www.answers.com/topic/supposed there's the link. However as I know it patients are people who are in a hospital requiring medical care, I believe the word you're looking for is patience.

 » SL vs Home

There have been other competitors to Second Life before, ever hear of There.com or maybe Google's Lively? The concept of a MUVE (Mutli-User Virtual Environment) is not a new concept. The big difference between Second Life and Home is their target audience. Second Life has always targeted businesses as a Web 2.0 product and to end users as a generic social network where you can make a profit. Home is geared towards social networking for Gamers and higher interactivity with games. Also Home may feature some user made content, but I highly doubt it will be on the same level as Second Life where everything is user created and owned. While they are similar its still comparing Apples to Oranges.

   Re: F34RM3 - 2008-10-10
 » Okay

I never said anything about Microsoft's avatars now did I? Read my later comments to someone who said almost the same thing. I don't care about either Home nor avatars. I'm just sick of Sony saying this and that then not delivering. And while yes perhaps the target audience is different the concept itself is ridiculously similar perhaps they don't match to a tee, but they are close besides I don't know how well home will do I mean I see how poorly Nintendo and Sony are doing in terms of online play and it just makes me wonder how well home will do. Is it going to be as horrendous and as laggy as PSN if so then I'm even more so uninterested.

   Re: chessboxer - 2008-10-10
 » Laggy PSN?

I've seen some laggy 3rd party servers (normally EA) but games which actually run off of Sony's (or 1st party) servers are not laggy.

Live is no stranger to lag either on some games, again it depends on who is hosting the servers. When Bad Company was launched, EA put up an apology on their site as the 360 players were finding it extremely laggy, sometimes to the point where it was unplayable but there was no problem for the PS3 gamers. Look at how many people are still complaining about lag on UT3 for the 360.

What issues was the SSF2THDR beta having on the 360 when playing online? I think it was severe lag. Granted it was a beta but don't think that Live as "all of that and a bag of chips with the dip" because it really isn't.

   Re: F34RM3 - 2008-10-10
 » Live VS PSN

Well let me put it this way I'm on the same connection and no lag for live, I had PSN crash on me multiple times to the point where I want to tear my hair out, and also to the point where I'm not even on anymore. On PSN (perhaps this is just me) but when someone with a ***** connection comes in the game goes to hell I can't so much as pop heads without lag. I have yet to experience any issues with live. There is a reason we pay for live and PSN is free, you get what you pay for plain and simple it's 50% MS being greedy and 50% so we can have truly dedicated servers and connections. Even Sony fans usually admit to LIVE being better cause it is. Then again on the other hand my PS3 doesn't sound like a leaf blower xD.

 » Ahem

Did I mention anything about XBOX 360 and their avatars? No I didn't I don't care about that either, I play my systems for games not social networking, minus online play. To be honest all Sony and MS are really doing is ripping each other off, the only company that's truly trying to be innovative and original is Nintendo (both in their handhelds and home consoles) but hey you stick to one sided fanboyism :]

I think he was talking about the article F34RM3, not your post.

   Re: F34RM3 - 2008-10-10

It just seems more directed at me, because he specifically says "this guy doesn't know what he is talking about" then again he could have meant the poster but I find that unlikely

 » console war!

interesting statement.
Sony always had the market and other tried with different levbels of success to also make some money.
That there is a console war between MS and Sony means that MS has captured a significant amount of market to force Sony to excel. This is good for all gamers as competition in the market means that the consumer has a bigger and hopefully better choice of products, games and add ons.
let the war continue because if one side wins we all lose.

 » LMFAO!

Anybody that says stupid avatars are more fun than Home are clearly fanboys. If I want an avatar I will play with my Wii.

   Re: F34RM3 - 2008-10-10
 » Gee

And it's not the least bit fanboyish to say what you've just said is it? I'm going to say this, everyone seems to think that the avatars are intended to be a rip off of Miis when they're not. Rare and Microsoft sat down and actually thought this up. And believe it or not there are actually some differences, see Miis have a basic set of clothes, a basic look, and a basic feel. Whereas the avatars actually have some depth (now mind you I'm not saying OMG avatars are completely different just slightly is all). The avatars have a constantly changing and updating wardrobe, facial features, etc, whereas everything for the Miis are fixed there's no updates and they feel almost bland. Now as I said does this mean that avatars are 100% original and unique hell no not by a long shot but they do feature things Miis don't just as HOME features things second life doesn't. Overall like HOME it's just something to represent you in this big virtual world we live in.

   Re: Darkthunder90 - 2008-10-10
 » Avatars

I believe the idea of Avatars is fair game. However, nintendo has a younger age demographic which is why they didn't put much work into it (Which explains the cartoonish looks.) I could understand if the 360 decided to make the avatars realistic, similar to ps3's home's characters, but instead they decided to make them cartoony as well. But the 360 has a higher age market which makes their decision on avatar looks questionable.

Oh and people don't even compare Home to 360's or Wii's avatars. Home is an actual virtual environment while the avatars are more of a profile thing.

   Re: F34RM3 - 2008-10-12
 » Thank you

-points to comment above mine- Thank you someone for seeing that, that it's something to represent you, whereas home is intended to be a virtual society like second life. I compare those two because they're similar and yet Sony is trying to act like the concept is new. New for a home console yes, but the concept itself is not new.

Rocket scientist Spartans own HD TV's and Playstation 3's, Retarded Guerrilla Cavemen own grandma's TV's and xbox 360's.

Justify why Xbox is good. It's not....and Microsofts tactics to get content and slander people are low. Microsoft copy's everyone else. Playstation is true qaulity and class. Justify your 50 friends on XBL, and the racist biggots you encounter daily screaming profanity at you.

» Xbox 360 is worth less value than the PS3 in terms of what you get for price

Cheapest Xbox 360 + the cheapest supposed price for the blu-ray drive is more expensive than the cheapest PS3, for the UK.

And since the PS3 contains better features and technology apart from that I have told you what will give you most for your money -> A PS3.

Also a 360 would be worse value than a PS3, if it were a rock, as I've said before.

   Re: shabghai360 - 2008-10-10
 » hmmm

I could agree with you on all points but the reason I also have the 360 is because I have been enjoying the games offered for 2 years now. Its not just value for money in a gamers mind its the fun you can have when you want it. When PS3 has the titles then the landscape could change. Without MS and the 360 it would be a one horse race and then Sony would not need to offer something that many feel is superior as it would be superior by default as there was no other alternative.

You are the most obvious fanboy. Everbody knows LIVE lags. have u played Halo3? its worse than laag. It halts in middle of games[black screen] then resumes since one always gets disconnected. Joining a game takes many minutes as opposed to many seconds - was enough for me stop paying and ditch LIVE overall.

I call BS on u claiming PSN laags. U hate sony for certain reasons, THEN u claim PSN sucks. thats uncool.

does LIVE actually provide dedicated servers for 1st party games? let me guess, u prefer p2p?

 » Right

And I'm such a fanboy that I spent $600 on a 60GB PS3, my PSN is GantzSensei if you don't believe me. Furthermore, I've had minor issues at best with live, and major at worst with PS3. Seriously bugger off, read my posts, I said PSN is a joke I said it might just be me, I'm not forcing my views on you just expressing my opinion which I am entitled to do. Never once did I say obey my thoughts and beliefs but because I don't adhere or agree with you suddenly I'm a fanboy gotta love the internet.
