Blu-ray disc - Image 1Now that the Blu-ray format has taken the crown after Toshiba dropped HD-DVD, Microsoft is reportedly in talks with Sony about the Xbox 360 adopting Blu-ray. Sony Electronics U.S. president Stan Glasgow has revealed that discussions are on-going.

Nothing is concrete as of now, but considering how Microsoft was able to bring HD-DVD add-ons to consumers, it seems reasonable to believe that a Blu-ray drive attachment is possible. As pointed out by the Financial Times, the Xbox 360 can go head-to-head with the PlayStation 3 if it had Blu-ray, but Sony will still be earning revenues.

When asked for comment, Microsoft only stated that:

We have made no such announcement. Games are what are driving consumers to purchase game consoles and we remain focused on providing the largest library of blockbuster games available.

On the other hand, Glasgow also said there are talks with Apple regarding Blu-ray. However, Apple intends to focus on digital media via downloads instead. Glasgow disagreed with the idea. "Downloading will build over time, but this will be over a period of years,” said Glasgow.

 » Eh

I guess an add-on would be good for people who absolutely will not buy a PS3 for whatever reason, but I'll just get Sony's system for that

Well it would only be a blu-ray movie player addon for the 360. If you wanted a blu-ray player, seems better to just buy a PS3 and get more out of it.

 » yeah

but PS3's and stand alone blu ray players are still over 300 bucks, an addon would most deffintatly cost people about 100 bucks less...

casper you must be out of it if your mind if you think the BD add on will cost $100, the hd dvd player for the egg box was $200 when it came out! think how much they will have to give sony and then put them out at $100 (£50). no chance!!

» the only stupid post is your post Predator

you can't wan't to hear anyone say anything very logical from their opinion. And you can't wait for anyone to say anything that is right about the Xbot that has become more than just common knowledge to the public that such a high a super high percentage of xbox are inevitably diseased with the RROD. Heck even their system on display at the game show a few weeks ago busted out witht he RROD in front of everyone and Qj even posted it was a dam fact. So how much more obvious does it have to get for to realize the horrible disease of RROD.....One WORD..DUMBA@S

What?!?!

Really isn't that expensive, and as far as the add-on for Blu-Ray on the 360 goes it would definitely cost 250 bucks MINIMUM for the add-on.

   Re: Master Chef - 2008-03-07
 » Yeah, that's about right

Maybe 200, but nothing below that. An Elite + BD drive would be $550 then
