Sony Worldwide Studios' Shuhei Yoshida - Image 1PlayStation 3 owners who are running out of space on their consoles, storing all downloadable goodies they've been hording over the months, may be a bit disappointed with the recent statement released by Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida, regarding the possibility of adding an external hard drive peripheral.

In an interview conducted by videogaming247, Yoshida mentioned that Sony has decided to forgo the optional hard drive for the PS3 after looking at Microsoft's own Xbox 360 console. He mentioned that this was done in an effort to provide "seamless gameplay" and solid digital distribution.

While the extra hard drive option was originally included in their plans upon the development of the console, they decided to go for better quality in the end. Here's a quote from Yoshida explaining Sony's decision:

Like Microsoft did, we could have had an optional hard drive and settled for cheaper combinations of hardware, but if we had done that - from a [development] standpoint - we cannot rely on every consumer to have a hard drive.

So that really helps us to focus on [the fact that] every consumer has a hard drive. Now we can cache data so that gameplay is seamless.

He went on to cite Uncharted as a good example of how the PS3 can already rely on its own hard drive to cut down on loading times. In addition, the compulsory hard drive gave developers a sort of measuring sticks to create games for digital distribution within a couple of gigabytes in size.

 » Idiot...

Apparently they don't realize that we mean a drive SEPARATE from the main internal one. This would allow us to store the extra non-game related stuff like videos, demo files, themes, wallpapers, music, etc.

What he is talking about is making the hard drive as a detachable component like the Xbox 360 hard drive is.

At least thats what I got from the article. Either way Sony is being stupid... as usual. *sigh* When are they going to learn that trying to fight piracy and hacking is just hurting the people who want to use their systems in a legitimate way. At this rate my PS3 may end up going the way of my PSP... traded in for some Xbox stuff. I can only handle so much Sony idiocy.

   Re: Uhyve - 2008-09-17
 » Eh?

What are you talking about Woden? Sony didn't write this article... they said the reason they went with internal drives, they're not the ones who titled it wrong. If you're saying everybody is asking for an external hard drive (which they weren't asked about judging from their response), then why not just get a regular USB drive? They can store everything but demos and full games, it's not like USB has a very good tranfer rate anyways, probably wouldn't get a very good gameplay experience... probably why Nintendo aren't making an hard drive addon for the Wii.

On a side note, having a built in hard drive may have been one of Sony's best decisions this generation.

you cant transfer video to an external HDD either, and unlike the 360, you cant re-download them without paying.

PS That's weird, my message got all messed up. Does QJ have a problem with Opera (web browser)?

   Re: hush404 - 2008-09-17
 » eh-

QJ has a problem with every browser. It messes up all the time and never works like it should.

BTW this article is a POS. Has nothing important to "report" on besides this sony exec defending their decision to include a HD in every console. Which is a superb move on their part and not forgetting that I can (with my PS3) upgrade my lil drive to an easy 320+gb drive for about $100 - where as some other consoles charge a f'n fortune for their branded HD upgrades (which max out at 120gb). Lastly, Usb HDDs do work with the PS3, providing terabytes of space.
   by Ray2Jerry - 2008-09-17
» Uh.. Why Does This Matter?

The harddrive is user-replaceable with any 2.5" SATA laptop drive. It's only about $100+ for a 320GB, and all your stuff can easily be transferred to it.

And if you just want more space for videos, music, etc then you can either use an external USB harddrive formatted to FAT32 or stream it through the wifi from another computer with all your music and videos on it like I do!

I think a Sony external harddrive would be completely unnecessary and likely more expensive than 3rd party ones :)

» External Hard Drive Woes :(

I think it would be a great idea to be able to easily use an external hard drive. I recently attempted to add my own external hard drive with low satisfaction do to the format type. Sony forces you to use a FAT32 format hard drive but I am having a problem getting it to partition over 32GB and my hard drive is a 320GB one. Windows won't allow me to make partitions over 32GB in size and making multiple partitions on the hard drive won't work because the PS3 only sees one partition. I even tried using the program "Swissknife" but for some reason windows won't let the program work. I tried it on both of my PCs. I have a Windows XP PC and a Vista PC. I even tried to format using command prompt per suggestions on the internet with no luck. Does anyone here know how to format a hard drive in FAT32 with a larger partition than 32GB? Any input would be appreciated.

   Re: chessboxer - 2008-09-18
 » erm

Try formatting the drive on a Windows 2000 Pro PC. That natively formats drives to FAT32 and/or NTFS, although I don't know many people who still use W2K.

Support for an external NTFS formatted HDD on the PS3 would be welcome though. I have to move my 11GB+ HD films onto the PS3's HDD via wireless which takes just over an hour per film.

   Re: Datnizzle - 2008-09-18
 » are you serious?

I bought a 320gb internal, put my old 60gb in an enclosure. Did a quick google search found a program, formatted the 60gb to fat32. Now I have a 320gb PS3 and a 60gb external drive. the only program you need is "disk director". you can buy it or download the torrent. it takes all of 10 sec to format my 60gb drive.

   Re: Sembazuru - 2008-09-18
» Formatting FAT32 on larger than 32GB drives...

Another option is to download one of the many Linux live CD/DVD options (for example Knoppix). You will download an .iso that needs to be burned to either a CD or a DVD. Boot your computer off the CD or DVD that your burned into Linux. (Note, this will do NOTHING AT ALL to your already installed Windows system on your hard drive. Once you are done, remove the CD and reboot and your Windows install will not know anything happened.) Plug the external drive into the USB port, and then format the whole thing as 1 partition in FAT32. The 32GB ceiling that MS institutes is a false ceiling to try to get people to stop using FAT32.

 » thanks guys

maybe I'll try those options
   by chessboxer - 2008-09-18
 » whatever

I gave my PS3 a much deserved 500GB internal HDD a few weeks ago which cost £25 more than the 360's 120GB HDD. Sony made the best choice by not having a proprietary HDD. Roll on a 1TB 2.5" SATA please.

   Re: rollypoly - 2008-09-18
 » agreed

M$ should drop it's total control over the HDD.

i have replaced 20s with 120s, but with game installs coming... i'm going to need atleast 500gigs...

   Re: thefinalhero - 2008-09-18
 » @rollypolly

Then keep the actual save data of the game saved on your PS3 and delete the Install data of the games you aren't playing. It won't effect your game and it will free of space. If you want to play that game again, once you start it up, it'll prompt for you to reinstall.

 » I think i get it....

I think I get what he's trying to say guys and that QJ has mis-interpretated the article. I don't think this article is really to do with adding an external hard drive, but more sonys decision not to release a model without one. Many developers are finding the problem that not every 360 owner has a hard drive, arcade model for example. By sony forcing you to have one, developers can be a lot more versatile. E.g. added content, slower loading times etc.. this is why he goes on to talk about Uncharted. I coule be very wrong guys, I'm not a know it all, just thing that the words 'extra' and 'optional' hard drive have been skewed.

 » as i've been saying

for long enough, buy an external 3.5 drive, and you can have an extra terabyte to play with that is quite cheap!!

why would you want to buy 1 from sony with inflated prices for small capacity, like microsoft has been doing to its customers all along?

 » HDXT for PS3

is what I'm using. 500GB 3.5 external HDD (with a case) which enables you to run a SATA cable to the HDXT. (google HDXT if ya dont know what it is)
Pros: easier way to change 3.5 HDD's which are cheaper then the 2.5
Cons: manually switching on/off the Hdd.

Actually you dont even need the HDXT,, but it does make it easier and secure.

Hey,

Check out this new site I found called GiftMonkey.com. They give away free high end Laptops, Video Game Consoles, iPods, Plasma TVs, and they even have GPS Navigation Systems.

This site is different from all of those others. They don't give you a time limit, and they don't make you signup for 10 sponsors yourself. All you have to do is try one of their sponsored offers like eBay (which doesn't cost anything), refer your friends, and they ship your free gift to your door, also free!

» is it really a problem?

i have a 60GB model (the one everyone should have bought when they still made them)
i have my entire ipod loaded onto it
tons of game demos and full games installed
plus the game installation data
i still have well over 20GB left. plus i believe you can use any commercial HDD in the ps3 that you want. just replace it with a 500GB HDD and you will be fine.

   Re: jmak0 - 2008-09-23
 » yes

i have the 60gb, and I always have to delete stuff to make room when I buy new games or download new demos. I also have a 10GB linux partition on it. I also have a large music collection on there. I have been thinking about buying a larger HDD for a while now, as it's annoying not being able to keep all my favourite demos and videos on it. The only thing holding me back is money and the fact its not a necessity.
