Square Enix's The Last Remnant - Image 1Square Enix developer Hiroshi Takai once again makes headlines with a casual comment made on the Xbox 360. Fresh off working on The Last Remnant (PS3, Xbox 360), Takai comments that:

It's been the team's first time working with Xbox 360 and the Unreal Engine. In both cases the experience has been a positive one.

In fact, as we've only just finished work on Last Remnant I don't even know what my next project is going to be at Square Enix. However, I'm very much hoping it'll be for Xbox 360 as it's been a lot easier to work with than PlayStation 3.

With the Xbox 360 getting a lot of attention from Squeenix lately - what with Star Ocean, Infinite Undiscovery, and of course, Final Fantasy XIII - it seems the exclusivity war really is over. Takai also comments on the studio's bid to better appeal to Western audiences.

We didn't try to appeal to one audience or the other, but tried to give everything we did a global appeal. From a visual standpoint there are some things you can get away with in Western games... characters can be less clean-cut.

 » Umm...

Didn't we know this already? The 360 is essentially a PC. It's why Left 4 Dead and Half Life 2 were easy ports on 360 while the PS3 got a bashing from Valve. And never got L4D...

the fact that the xbox360 is easier to program than the ps3 is something that everyone already know...

Creating a game on the SNES is easier than the N64 too. Does this mean the 360 is that far inferior to the PS3? I think so!!!!!!

   Re: Viphid - 2008-12-18
 » Sadly...

the games were better on the Super Nintendo than the N64. Does that mean games suck on the PS3 compared to the 360? Yes. If developers get frustrated working harder to get the same results that they did on an XBOX 360, they should complain. It's convenient to say that Dev's are "lazy" when they admit the 360 is easier than the PS3 but as soon as Kojima and PS3 1st party Dev's say "oh, we couldn't fit this game on a DVD" that isn't lazy? MGS4 is a 4-6 hour game. Oh yea, that needs a Blu-Ray. Sorry boy-os, Oblivion is 10 times the game MGS4 could ever be. It didn't even win Game of the Year on PS3. Little Big Planet did. Ha! I'll take my Square Enix titles any way I can for my 360. They've been quality so far. Star Ocean will continue that trend. Final Fantasy 13 will be even better. Word.

Well, if they were putting out quality stuff like Namco (Vesperia) more people would care. Last Remnant and Infinite Undiscovery were average at best - Square needs to learn how to use Unreal Engine properly.

   Re: Genotype - 2008-12-16
 » Second that...

I agree, Last remnant is so glitchy that they cant honestly say that was a success working with the 360. It would be great if the PS3 version runs better, it would be a good win for the system.

   Re: Shatterdome - 2008-12-16
 » Yeah...

I don't really care about squenix anymore. I have not played a game of theirs, on a system this generation that was good....and even the last few games on PS2 were crap...

 » Hmmm

It resembles what happened with the saturn and playstation.

The saturn was extremely diffcult to produce games, making it so only a about 5-10% could use the max power of the saturn, wheres the playstation was a plataform that was really easy to make games.

I don't think you guys have to right to criticize the opinion of a producer. If he thinks it's easier to produce on the 360, is your world going to crumble?

Grow up

   Re: Thinker - 2008-12-16
 » To Cortador

Well, Cortador, all of what the developer said would make sense if "easy" translated into "a good product", which The Last Remnant certainly is not. Maybe you can play it and see for yourself how technically disastrous that game is?

   Re: logicbomb.de - 2008-12-16
 » "easier" NOT "easy"

Sqeenix said "easier" - they did not say that devving for 360 is "easy".

and why should easier imply a good product of any kind?

I mean Algebra (360) is EASIER than Calculus (PS3), but if you suck at math (Unreal engine 3) you're still going to get a bad grade (Last Remnant).

and Cortador, great point on the Saturn vs PS1.
Saturn had more powerful hardware than PS1 (had dual 32-bit CPUs and a 3rd coprocessor) but was poorly implemented and was extremely difficult to program for and to have both CPUs running in sync so most games only used one CPU and looked and played far inferior to the same game on PS1

 » @logicbomb

That was an amazing analogy :)
   by ZeroDoom - 2008-12-16
 » Well yeah..

People can't even make good apps for multi cpu PCs. So naturally the PS3 is hard to code for because there is a lack of that programmers that can code for those kinds of environments.

   Re: core2kid18 - 2008-12-16
» you dont need to use multi core

bypass the cores of the PS3 and use just 3 cores like what the 360 has. "PS3 is hard to code for" is a dev's lazy excuse. The PS2 was harder to code for than the Xbox and look where it reached.

   Re: logicbomb.de - 2008-12-16
 » bypass the core

Thats what devs did for the Sega Saturn, programming for a dual-cpu system is difficult as hell so often time only one CPU was used and it led to games much worse than the same game on PS.

But why intentionally "cripple" the PS3 by coding for less cores that can be used?

   Re: Random1800 - 2008-12-16
 » uhhh

@core2kid18
acctualy, the reason why the ps3 is harder to code for is because it uses the cell prosesor, which is fairly new and people dont have much prior experience with it.

you were loking at it as if the less cores you have, the easier it is to code
its acctualy way more complicated that that, there is way more to a cpu that a the clock speed and the amount of cores.

 » Whatever

Call me when SE starts to make quality games again.

I really don't care if SE thinks its easier to make games for the Xbox, what I want is the great games they made before they merged.

 » LOL yeah right

They say it's easier, but last remnant lag like hell without HD install...

Ya, much easier for the slacking company! They only have to fill 8GB instead of 50! Take the easy way out, dumb asses. *****ing moron company puts Parasite Eve 3 on the freakin' cell phone!

 » Wow you're slow

Parasite Eve 3[rd birthday] is now a PSP exclusive.

 » we know already!

other devs have already said this about 1 year ago.
I guess in another year another dev will say the same thing.
Who cares which is harder, stop complaining about the platform your working on and just make good games with NO BUGS. People here are saying the game they are talking about is full of bugs and crap. If they released thier games finished and tested then maybe they can complain but if they are half done and buggy then we are the ones who get to complain.

I'm getting tired of games getting released then 1 week later there is a patch then 1 month later another patch. WTF! How about testing before releasing so it actually works when it gets released. I wont buy beta software and thats what your forcing us to do.

Very good RPG. Seems to get bashed by those who are are haters or just ignorant. The story is better than a majority of Final Fantasies and the combat is unique. Team formations, real time/turn based strategy. I like the fact that you can create/upgrade weapons but it isn't some tedious act as in FF11 or the similar but different Infinite Undiscovery. Sure, it was glitchy and I had to download it to my hard drive but since doing so, it really improved my experience. The combat is the true star but then again, that's why I love Fable so much. Keep up the good work Square/Tri Ace.
