Volition's Saints Row 2 for PS3, Xbox 360 - Image 1

With the success of Rockstar North's Grand Theft Auto 4 (Xbox 360, PlayStation 3) still fresh in the minds of gamers, it leaves some people wondering if THQ's Saints Row 2 (Xbox 360, PlayStation 3) can still offer anything new to compete against its biggest rival. During a recent William Blair & Company investors meeting, THQ CEO Brian Farrel explained some of the differences between the two sandbox action titles, which made each game unique from the other.

During the meeting, Farrel sought to convince investors that their sequel would still stand out in contrast to Rockstar's own release. The biggest difference that Saints Row 2 will have compared to GTA4 is that it will be about "tongue-in-cheek [...] silly, over-the-top gameplay".

At the same time, Farrel still recognized the efforts GTA4 has made to step up its own series with the creative direction Rockstar has decided to take with it. Here's a quote from Farrel explaining his stand on the matter:

We're always concerned about GTA as a competitor. It's a great product, the leader in the genre. But we were actually very pleased when we saw GTA4. It's a great game, but they went in this great creative direction [that makes the game] more character- and story-driven.

Farrel was pleased with this development since it meant that each title will offer unique takes in their common genre. He further explained that Saints Row 2 will feature a lot of character customization, downloadable content, a "larger, richer environment", a unique combat system, and a "seamless" two-player co-op mode.

He ended his statement by explaining THQ's decision to opt for a two month delay of Saints Row 2, pushing its release date back to October 14. Farrel mentioned that this was done at the request of developer Volition, giving them more time to polish the game and adding a comfortable window in between the flood of upcoming Christmas titles.

 » THQ vs Rockstar!!!

1st Once More.

I haven't played Saint Row yet, but saw some gameplay at a Gameshop on PS2.
So I don't know if they will live up to what everyone is expecting, since playing GTA 4.
Anyway, any competition will push the game developers to create hot, big and cool games is the near future.

This is good, hope the game won't flop.

» The major difference: one is good

Still, Saint's Row 2 COULD be okay since it has 2 player coop, wich is really cool. But the game won't come close to GTA4, that's for sure. Saint's Row 1 was really bad, and I'd be supprised if the studio just got good! lol.

 » The first Saints Row

Was boring. It was cool how you could smoke blunts in the quick-e-mart. But overall it sucked.

» I'd just like to say...

before the flaming and spamming and allllll the fanboys wonder why comments are popping up in "their" console's section of QJ, its because if an article is posted or related to both systems then QJ shares the comment system so ps3 comment posters see what 360 posters have to say and vice versa. so before people are all "what are you doing hanging around the ps3 section" just know that they share the freaking article. just letting you know just CASE thats what happens to this article, and hopefully people will stop in the future.

» There doesnt seem to be any multiplayer.

I liked the multiplayer in the first game. Blinged out Ride was really fun to play. It looks like they decided not to include any multiplayer for some reason. The GTA4 multiplayer is garbage, I dont know why they even tried because they didnt seem to try very hard. Rockstar didnt even make separate multiplayer maps, they just stick the matches in the same levels you play the single player in. GTA4 is ok but I thought the missions would be more interesting because it gets repetitve after awhile. The cut scenes are the only parts of the missions that are actually interesting because the missions themselves always entail you going somewhere and either shoot some designated people or steal a certain car. I was expecting a little more creativity from Rockstar but I guess they wanted to concentrate on the radio stations, t.v. channels, comedy clubs and other things like that in the game.

Did you even play GTA4 multiplayer? There aren't separate levels because it's the whole city...and none of the co-op missions are SP missions
