Reports have been circulating the Net about how the PlayStation 3 version of Ghostbusters: The Video Game appears to be lackluster compared to the Xbox 360 version. Richard Leadbetter, Director of HD consultancy Digital Foundry and author of Eurogamer's Face-off features, described it as "time-warping back to the dawn of PS3 development."
What makes this actually even more confounding is the fact that Terminal Reality supposedly cannot wait to "show off their PS3 technology" and that they do have a great technology for it in the form of Infernal Engine. Today, we have Terminal Reality, the developer of the PS3 version, setting the record straight as to why the PS3 version looks softer. A spokesperson told Joystiq: For the record, the PS3 version [of Ghostbusters] is softer due to the 'quincunx' antialiasing filter and the fact that we render at about 75% the resolution of the 360 version. So you cannot directly compare a screen shot of one to the other unless you scale them properly. The PS3 does have less available RAM than the 360 - but we managed to squeeze 3 out of 4 textures as full size on the PS3. Here are the comparative screenshots taken by Richard Leadbetter: Xbox 360 PS3 Related Articles:

» I still don't get it..
The 360 version is clearly better looking, but why? Judging by those pictures, even if they were scaled properly I think there would still be a distinct difference in graphics. One of the reviews I read said when you hit the Stay Puft Marshmellow Man with the proton stream in the 360 version it shows embers, but not on the PS3. These guys still have some explaining to do.

Especially considering these idiots made out that the PS3 was such a better platform to develope for leading up to the release of this game. The volumetric smoke clouds in KillZone2 are to die for. Ah well maybe they'll release a patch for the PS3 version still doesn't explain the disparity between what they said in development and what the finished product looks like.
I normaly can branded an xbot by the way but KZ2 changed the playing field.
I know longer think the PS3 is incapable of bettering the 360 I just think Sony have got some serious axes to grind with their departments who put together their development software.
It just seems to be way too hard for developers to multiplatform effectively.
SONY MAKE IT EASIER FOR DEVS AND YOUR PRODUCT WILL SMASH THE COMPETITION!
Well neither 360 or PS3 is going to smash the wii, but yeah the wii is in a different league of their own (a better selling more profitable one).

All they have to do to fix the blurring problem is stop using Quincunx AA. Quincunx aa gives you the effect of 4X FSAA at the performance cost of 2X FSAA....however it is notorious for blurring texutres. They should just patch it to use 2X FSAA...there might be more jaggies, but at least everything will not be so blurry.
What is the point of it being 720p when it has the visual fidelity of a standard definition game...

PS3 has 256 ram for the games and 256 for the OS... I'm pretty sure they just failed at utilizing it correctly when Guerrilla can make a game like KZ2 be 720p and 1080i native.
Imo, the visuals are lackluster on both versions anyway, but oh well.

KZ2 looks visualy amazing, and that comment is coming from a pc gamer. As far as the 360 is considered, I haven't touched or looked at one in 3 years, its dead tech to me. I think you are dead on about you comment, they probably focused on 360 production and ported it over to the ps3. But sadly enough most developers still do it, b/c it's cheaper, and as a result the game is cheapened for the ps3,

Again, this is a multiplataform game. It was made so it could played on both consoles.
Of course the developer has some fault on this matter, but remember that Killzone was built from the ground up specifically for one plataform.

It is for ALL consoles that are still selling. ps2 wii ps3 psp xbox 360 ds. So the game did have to be ported between them. I think they just took the ps2 version and tried to upscale it for the ps3.
The PS3 is supposed to have more greater visuals than other consoles. What is wrong with game developers?
Do they not know how to use the technology?

this is not a valid statement because it is coming from spokesperson, he doesn't know *****. u can fix the texture issue by changing the color range to full. the man doesn't have a clue of what he is talking about. EVERYONE knows that the 360 and the ps3 have the same amount RAM (512MB)

» Actually No...
The 360 and the PS3 may have the same amount, 512MB, but that's just the number. the structure of the RAM is what's different and most important. The 360 has 512MB of UNIFIED RAM. The PS3 has 512 of TOTAL RAM. Where on the 360 the GPU and CPU share from the same pool of RAM, on the PS3 GPU has 256MB for itself and the CPU has 256MB to itself. They cannot crossover. So if PS3 version of the game would run better with 300MB of RAM, well there just SOL and MUST find a way around it. Were as on the 360, the developer can just use the 300MB from the single 512MB pool and give the CPU the remaining 215MB. Both structure choices have advantages and disadvantages.

PS3 has very large BW for XDR to GDDR3 memory transfer and this can be done via DMA. Being able to store data on XDR is an advantage because the CELL can work on procedural textures with greater performance.
The reduced RAM that the developers were talking about is the XMB which reserves a certain amount of memory for itself, more than the 360 OS menu.
Having said all that clearly the developers made little attempt to find ways of optimising the engine as it's pretty poor for both consoles and texture heavy, where the ps3's strength lies in vertex heavy level designs.

I like the fact it doesn't look that much different. I personally like ATI cards more than NVidia but hey man thats cool. If I didn't have a 360 I wouldn't feel jipped. Also, KZ2 > all 360 games at the present moment

and you can really tell the difference too, antialiasing filters take up alot of vram on the nvidia and ati chips i guess this is it too simply not enough ram, and thats sad...

I think the main reason which these guys have a case to answer on is that they stated in development that they were developing primarily for the PS3. That the PS3 was a better console to develop for so why have they came a cropper. Did they learn from mistakes made on the PS3 and fixed on the 360 but were just ran out of time to implement these on the PS3?

Yeah, it doesn't have the graphics of KZ2, but I don't think every game should. I like a little variety in the look of games. My gf is playing the PS3 version right now and having fun. That's what matters.

» texture mapping is ram related
This was dumb on Sony's side not to share the rams like the 360. Sony needs to send out a firmware to update this (probaly not) 1. an OS don't need half the system memory to run a game.
What the developer didn't do was use the more physic and lighting effects where the PS3 has an advantage there with more cpu calcuations.
I think window does some ram dumping and allocate it to the game when you start to play the game and the PS3 needs to do the same.
But if the developers and programers know what they are doing then look at RE5 on both systems (got PS3), pretty awesome on both.

» More RAM to settle the score
i remember when the xbox published its 512mb unified ram for its new xbox, then launched it. Why didn't sony take that delay as a oppertunity to double the ram. 512mb graphics and 512mb cpu really would have settled the difference between the platforms mich quicker. I know the ps3 has already cost sony a lot of money, but how much more would an extra 512mb cost sony back in 2007?
Ps3 is still clearly better than xbox when the extra dev work is put in. but making it easier for the developers...
Just imagine what killzone 2, little big plannet and gt5 might have looked with even more ram.
I still expect the ps3 to cleanup and win latter in the cycle.
p.s. the new vidzone ps3 feature of 10,000 free music videos is great, best addition i've seen since the photo app, home, life etc! This sort of thing shows where sony are better than ms.

» they suck at programming
Uncharted looks better than many 360 games, and most PS3 3rd person games. Few other developers have made 3rd person games look as good as Uncharted on the ps3. If they spent more time programming natively instead of converting the 360 textures (as is what appears to have been done by what they said, in spite of them saying it was developed independently), they could achieve the same graphics on both systems. Uncharted is cleverer, and streams the textures to the uber fast memory, whereas Ghost Busters is dumb and uses the old fashioned "load everything at once into memory and don't make use of the system's bandwidth, resulting in blurry textures" method

That article is why I picked the PS3 version over the 360 version, well that and I can't stand the 360 controllers design. Anyway, so much for the "amazing results"....

The PS3 just need more time in developing to achieve the same graphics. The problem here was that Sony Pictures put pressure on the developers to finish the game so it could raise some hype for the upcoming third Ghostbusters movie.
(Oh, the irony.)
You can compare the PS3 and Xbox 360 with cars. Let's say the PS3 is a black car and the 360 a green car.
The black car has less acceleration but a higher topspeed.
The green car has more acceleration but a lower topspeed.
The black car just needs more time to reach the same speed but in the end it's faster.
...the problem is that the cars reach the goal (release date) before they achieve high speed.

The PS3s best mode is reserved for motion pictures. The only question is will people become dumber and believe this isn't true or will Sony become smarter and make something like a PS3-squared with dual cells

they bull*****ted it. they worked on the 360 version only and at the last minute ported it. the ps3 can do alot better than this. even other multiplatform games look better than this (bionic commando, cod4)
this game looks like a first gen ps3 game, with the same first gen ps3 game problems (multiplats anyways) where the textures looked horrible and there was a lack of proper lighting. its simply lazy devs. they didn't want to properly optimize it.
