Tri-Ace, the developers responsible for the Valkyrie Profile and Star Ocean games, are teasing a new game for the Sony PlayStation 3 and Microsoft Xbox 360 on their main website right now. They've also put up another teaser site cunningly called "NEWRPG".

It's pretty standard tease fare: a mysterious image complete with running countdown timer (9 days to go!). There's also some Japanese words on the teaser, which according to Tri-Ace's English site means "The NEW RPG PROJECT has been started".

The first time I saw this I was convinced that it would be a new Valkyrie Profile game so I spent a lot of time looking for clues in the original Valkyrie Profile's opening sequence. I found nothing. The lollipop-like structure to the right reminds me of Lezard's tower in SIlmeria, though.

For some reason I was also reminded of that mysterious screenshot that was supposedly from a new Square Enix game. Given the history between Tri-Ace and Square Enix, could both be from the same game? It also fits in with Square Enix's multiplat strategy.

Of course there's another possibility here: it's an elaborate April Fools prank. What about you guys? What do you think this game is?
