Xbox Live console ban - Image 1

The ongoing Console Live Ban Wave on XBL has elicited a lot of shock and disbelief from Xbox Live customers, particularly with modded consoles. A lot of questions are swirling about as well, and we can imagine plenty of you guys have screamed out in anguish, "Why meeeeeeeeeeeee???"

Well, Kushan of #FW@EFnet gave us a little bit more insight as to what this ban entails, so if you're one of them who got the banhammer's kiss of death, read on. A quick overview of the effects of the ban would show that your banned console can no longer do the following:
  • Cannot go on Xbox Live
  • Cannot install games to the HDD
  • Cannot use Windows Media Centre extender
  • Cannot be used to get achievements from backups without corrupting your profile
What can you do to get around this problem? Pretty much nothing. As Kushan puts it, "You can't do anything about this, short of buying a new 360."

As to the causes of the bans, there have been a lot of theories thrown out there to answer for this question. c4eva of iXtreme had these to say:

<+c4eva> fw itself not detectable
<+c4eva> suspect they are going hard on warez releases and incorrect use of abgx!
<+c4eva> just to let you know that im looking into the current ban wave. I am currently running several brand new xboxs on live! These xboxs are in various configs. All are running ixtreme 1.61
<+c4eva> One is running original discs, another is running on xbl (no discs) , another is running a backup from my region!
<+c4eva> until tests are completed, no eta on liteon fw!

As it is, though, these are not confirmed and are purely conjectures, logical and plausible as they may be. An investigation is ongoing right now to get to the bottom of this ban wave, so we'll just be sure to update you once we here more. In the meantime, yeah, it sucks.

If You got banned move over to PS3. :)

 » Now wait a minute

That's not fair.. I can understand banning the console from the internet and trying to restrict piracy, but you OWN the console, you should be able to modify it.. Even if it's illegal. I got banned a while ago for no reason, no response.. so I modded. What's the point if they won't listen to your defense? I can install games to the HDD.. but come on, it's your console.

BTW. PS3 is great, I'm glad more people are coming to it.. It might soon replace Live because PSN is free, and when the PS3 gets more amazing online games, I'm sure people will take advantage of it.

 » Wait WTF?!

# Cannot install games to the HDD
# Cannot use Windows Media Centre extender

That means that MS has DIFFERENT KINDS OF BANS, because *my* banned 360 can do both of those.

BTW, if you get banned, don't even bother calling Microsoft. They are absolutely unhelpful and devoid of remorse. Even if your console is banned because you bought it from someone who modded it, and you don't know that it was modded, they blame YOU, and absolutely WILL NOT help you.

If you agree to the XBL agreement, Microsoft essentially says "you know everything that was ever done with this console. no excuses. and if you don't f*ck you."

They control XBL tighter than China controls its internet access. It's disgusting.

i knw you guys don't won't to hear this but come to ps3 u will adapt and most of my friends have modded xboxes and they don't even play it anymore because ps3 has caught up and is now passing xbox on almost every level of the system, just get a ps3 tell your friends on xbox u moved to ps3 and trust me they will find you with there ps3

 » pointless

If they don't want to pay for games it's completely pointless to move to PS3 since it cannot play backups yet.

With all the money they save on games it's worth it to just buy a new or used cheap arcade console.

   Re: Navani - 2009-11-10
 » @Specht

NOT true, because ever since I've been banned, I realize I appreciate games more and I'm a lot more picky. For example, I will be buying CoD Modern Warfare 2, Dead Rising 2, Heavy Rain (yes I know it's an exclusive).. but like Need for Speed games, Army of Two, any game that can be beat in like 3 hours, that'll be from thepiratebay because that's just a waste of time. Well, Call of Duty was pretty short, but the online has experience points! omgg

Some of us want to play online without getting banned :D And everyone isn't getting consoles because they want to pirate

   Re: Shatterdome - 2009-11-10
 » Specht

From experience, most people that pirate games do not even play 90% of the games they download. They may check em out briefly or whatever, but don't really tend to play them out...and most definitely would not buy them if they had no other choice...

When you have to buy games, you become a lot more picky and tend to finish the games you buy.

I owned a 360 and it busted, so now a PS3....and for both i've bought 5 games or so, just barely enough (by your arguement of pirated games saving money) to pay for another system if it got banned.

Thing is, then you have to keep worrying about playing online, or avoid it all together......playing online is a huge part of the majority of games I buy (and most other people) so why even bother with having to worry about that ?

Re: Specht - 8 days ago
 » I still don't see the point.

Yes, if you have "turned a new leaf" so to speak, you could get a PS3 instead and buy your games.

I own a modded Xbox 360 and a PS3 and yes, I pay for the PS3 exclusives. But if somebody only owned an Xbox 360 and didn't want to pay for their games, buying a PS3 instead of a new 360 would be counterproductive...

I'm getting a vibe here that people think that regular legit users are being banned from Xbox Live when I have seen no reports from that.

if you got banned, that's your fault. You should have never put yourself in that position to begin with.

   Re: Serosis - 2009-11-10
 » ...

Exactly, if you love playing games online then why go through the trouble and the stress.

@vern1000

Yeah because most of us have $300+ to throw on a console not to mention $60+ for games.

But I guess you're right in one aspect, if you have the money for XBL you should be able to make the switch eventually.

I would rather have a PS3 it's just that it is *****ing expensive and my 360 was just $100.

   Re: zzk2001 - 2009-11-10
 » @InTheZoneAC

Not everyone who gets banned is some Modder or anything, Some times you get to many people pissed off at you and BAM you'll get banned.

I know this as it happen to me With my Xbox 1, it was never modded and played Halo2 all the time, Made a lot of people pissed by just being good at a game then One day i was banned.

So don't think your safe just because your 360 is not modded.

   Re: Silver-Tiger - 2009-11-10
 » ...

@Serosis: The price excuse just doesn't work anymore. if you want a PS3 that badly you could sell your 360. The PS3 just got a pricecut and if you get a used PS3 you can get it for 200 bucks. considering your 360 sells at 100, that's only another 100 bucks.

and the prices are the same for PS3 games, unless of course you download your games, in this case, the PS3 isn't anything for you anyway....

 » lol M$

Guys dont you see IT !!!?

ok flow me

1 - M$ announce great upcoming services ( sport+ , face , tweat )
2 - chrismas is comming
3 - the Ban bar rised hard ( and they aim 1.000.000 ) lol

so 1.000.000 xbox ban mean a automatic conversion of about 900.000 xbox Salles wich mean

900.000 xbox X 290$ = 261000000 $

as reported by many xbox users , they got banned whille they did never Mooded their console so no buckup either .

personaly i think M$ ban system is splited on Multi levels , highest level is activated then more restriction criteria for Ban and more income for M$ of course .

sadly we cant do anithing to stop this , just hope our genius find a way to stealth the 360 hardwares , bcz we have the right to modify and repeir our consoles .

but the Worse on that is that M$ BROKE COnsoles now

* Cannot go on Xbox Live : OK
* Cannot install games to the HDD : Why
* Cannot use Windows Media Centre extender : Why
* Cannot be used to get achievements from backups : Why

when we think about it , why M$ is hacking us on our system 360 , the fact that they can modify hard ware that mean one thing they have full acces on our system , the connected to our media center and reuters .

hope one guy from US sue them for this , remember they got sued On XP for this and they removed it saying it was to retrive log errors , so lets move 360 players .

 » ..

can you get banned even if you dont do any modifications to your 360?.. coz if you do, i wont bother unlocking some achievements then, coz thatll be a waste of time.. oh well, i rarely use my 360 anyway.. i only play old games that are dirt cheap and all JRPGs exclusive to the 360..

   Re: Silver-Tiger - 9 days ago
 » ....

You can get banned for eveything. if you play backupped games, If you insult other players, even if they don't like your face. It's their service after all, even if you pay for it.
terms of Use.

That actually applies for the PSN, too. They can ban your console, too.

I can use Windows Media Extender, and get achievements from burnt games but can't install games?
I deleted SEGA Superstars Tennis off my HDD to check and the message I get upon trying to reinstall is 'Installation of this game isn't supported'.
Surely they could just say 'Your account has been banned and we are doing all that we possibly can to inconvenience you'.

This is BS.

 » already told you guys...

a lot of the people who played MW had hacked versions. They've created several security measures on PC, and this is one of the measures for Xbox. It's not that complicated. The rest is just crossfire (pun intended).
