Internet ExplorerWe're sure the question might have bugged you many times. The folks over at Joystiq want an answer to this question too. While I would say that it is a pretty valid question, I have my own opinions as to why it probably won't happen for a long time, and why Microsoft won't implement it.

Firstly, there's the fact that Microsoft has almost the whole desktop software market to themselves. In any case, neither Sony or Nintendo are planning to invade that space. That simple fact has made sure that over 75% of the world is browsing the internet on Internet Explorer, Microsoft's own browser. Although browsers like Firefox and Opera among others have made inroads into that space, it's still a meager 15%-20%. You have to realize corporate brains - Why would Microsoft spend money and time to make another browser when they already have over half of the world surfing on Internet Explorer?

Besides, the Xbox 360 isn't portable which means that you're probably in your home when you're on the 360. I think you can probably move a few inches away from your console and check your email on your PC, which by the way, is most probably running Windows and maybe even Internet Explorer.

The main reason why Sony and Nintendo are doing this would be because they want to pull the crowd away from Microsoft. Talking about Nintendo and the Wii, I just remembered that it's only going to do 480p. Now seriously, people have been complaining about how it's too difficult to play Dead Rising on their SDTVs because of the small text. Would that argument not apply here? And you have to remember that most of the sites these days recommend a resolution of at least 800x600. I can guarantee you that it won't be a fun experience browsing the internet on your Wii running Opera at a low resolution.

When talking about Sony, well, they've already had a browser on the PSP so they do have some experience with it. Secondly, since they're directly competing with Microsoft and saying that the PS3 will replace the desktop, it would've been absurd not to bundle in a web browser. While they might probably keep the people hooked onto the PS3 because of one more added feature, I don't see anyone buying the PS3 because it has a web browser, or rather, I don't see anyone not buying the Xbox 360 because it doesn't have one. Besides, if it gets too hot for Microsoft, I'm sure they can get a derivative of Internet Explorer on the Xbox 360. What do you think? Should Microsoft implement a browser? Let us know your thoughts through the comments.

 » no no to IE

if i have a Xbox360, I don't want to have to worry most of the time about patching the firmware every now and then due to security fault in internet explorer when I will just play games with it most of the time. But I can welcome a firefox port to Xbox 360.

 » it wouldnt download anything

it wouldnt be able to get spyware because active x could be disabled and IE7 is pretty good against spyware. And they should just disable downloading all together. so, meh. I would really like a browser on the 360. they might already have plans for it as part of xbox live.

 » Why?

Consoles arent built or suited for Internet.
Only Wii might have it built "ok" to use with the Wiimore.

But using a controller is very poor.
Plus text input, yes u can use USB keyboard, but then thats another thing to buy!

Web browsing on a console is nothing more then a gimmick.
It is a MOUSE driven application.

'Why doesn't the Xbox 360 have a browser? We're sure the question might have bugged you many times. "

No, actually, never once. Why in the world would I EVER want an internet browser EVER on my Xbox, EVER? I have a computer, I mean come on. And oh, the 360 controller would work great as a mouse! Please. What a horrible, gimmicky idea. Nobody in their right minds would use the internet on their xboxes when they have a computer. How would you type in searches and web addresses? The Xbox guide/keyboard system is too clunky and slow as is, let alone trying to type stuff on Google.

Bad idea. Nobody wants a web browser on their 360, just let it die.

You are just jelous that the Playstation 3 and the Wii can do it and Microsoft is too cheap and stingy to actually put "cool" features on a console!!!!! AHAHHAAHAH. So you are trying to act all tough saying no one wants an internet browser. I own a 360 too and guess what you buffoon? I WANT AN INTERNET BROWSER! SO MICROSOFT LISTEN UP AND GET ONE SO THAT I CAN CHECK OUT WEBPAGES ON A 100" PLASMA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

 » Why doesn't the Xbox 360 have a browser?

Never ever? Nobody? Come on, when voting is as polarized as it is, do you think you can speak for the entire XBox-buying population?

As for the typing text comments - hook up a keyboard - it is that easy.

My vision of electronic utopia is all devices converge into one. I shouldn't have one device for phone calls, another for TV/movies, another for games, another for surfing, another for playing music, etc. Of course this hasn't happened mainly because of the technological challenges but also in part because the average consumer is still willing to shell out big bucks for each separate device.

Think about a cell phone and how it has incorporated an answering machine, pager, and low end camera into it role as a phone. Keep this ball rolling and someday your living room is going to have some unimaginable today electronic heart that does it all. And hopefully at the fraction of the cost.

I'd love to see it, and the way it looks, Microsoft may repeat history. Their competitors have listened to the consumers and appear to be adding browsers. Maybe Microsoft will listen when Open Source is mature and systematized enough to respond quickly to the consumer market. Oh wait, it will already have been too late then.

 » I agree....

I think a web-browser on a console is a gimmick. It was a damned cool gimmick back in the day of DC, but not so much now. I'm thinking 10% if not less of the people that buy a 360/ps3/wii will not have a computer, and even less without a computer and internet. Actually I'm thinking it's probably near 0%....nowadays if you have internet access, you have a PC...so ya, why the hell would you want to surf on a TV when you have a PC...Even on devices like the PSP where it's portable and semi useful, I think i've used it all of 3 times outside my home....

This is the best idea ever. Wii and PS3 have this ability. Why dosen't the x360? I think it would be tight to surf the web on my 100" Plasma!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

 » Browser is pointless

It's pointless, I have more then one computer at home which connects wirelessly to the internet, why do I need my 360 to do it as well? I would rather sit at my desk and be able to use a keyboard and mouse to properly navigate around the net. It would be just awkward for a home console. So Nintendo and Sony have browsers with their consoles...so what? What is the point of it? Console updates? Game downloads? Oh wait, isnt that what Xbox Live is for?

 » I want a web browser

I think M$ should give the 360 a web browser, everyone else is doing it so why not M$? I mean when my brother is on the computer, I wouldn't mind to check my mail on the tv in the living room, that would be awesome. There's always someone on the internet in my house, so another way to access it would be great. and I already have a usb mouse and keyboard so all I gotta do is plug it in and get on the internet. Make it happen this fall microsoft!! You might as well!!

 » I want a browser + more

I would love a browser for the 360. And I think Microsoft could possibly make money off of it. If they added some cool features to it, maybe like put it in the Guide button menu so you can surf while playing a game, download music/videos/pictures off the internet and onto the hard drive, etc., then I would definately love to have it. I agree that having a browser on the 360 would be kind of pointless if all the browser could be used for was going on websites. But, if there were some awesome features and things that you could do, depending on what those features are, it might just make it worth using. And about the thing with the keyboard and mouse: If Microsoft did release a browser, I think that it would be a good idea for them to sell a USB mouse and keyboard packaged together as XBOX360 accessories. They could just make cheap, crappy ones that while not being good quality, would get the job done. Then it would be very affordable to people. ANd think about this, if Microsoft released a specific USB keyboard and USB mouse for use on the 360, that would give game developers a very big reason to incorporate the use of the two in their games. Most people hate the idea of HALO WARS, BFME, and any other RTS on a console because of the bad controls. This woud fix the problem. And for true FPS fans, theres nothing better then the old keyboard mouse combo. And im not saying that they should make these game require you to have the keyboard and mouse, but for them to make it an alternative to the controller.

ok..... im done

Shouldn't you be concentrating on playing the game instead?!

So far MS has produced a very good/excellent console. More features + more bugs.

Keep in mind that the web browser is the commmon PCs weakest point (in case of security). Why would the console be any different?

No, let's keep it like it is, consoles for gaming and PCs for everything else.

I dont hate the xbox 360 nor anything like that, but I believe that whoever wrote this article is microsoft's biggest fanboy. True that a browser is not necessart on a console, but its also true that a console doesnt need to have 1080 to be a great console. Just look at the ds, it have poor graphics and still its a great console.

I have a pc for internet, i dont need my 360 to get a web browser. it would be a nice feature but really its not needed on a console. i could just go on my computer which is like 2 feet away from my 360... now a feature needed for 360 is video streaming with windows XP. thats something needed since my lcd tv owns my computer moniter..

 » rubbish

This artical is crap. 1st it says Sony and Nintendo are'nt planning to invade that space, then later on says they are WTF!

Oh and the reason why Dead Rising is poor on SDTV is because Capcom didn't write th code for SDTV. They are now going to adapt any games for SDTV and HDTV.

So with the Wii being SDTV only then it wont be a problem. Although yes, it's not ideal I know.

Onto the wether I want a browser? Well it'll be nice to have one but I would say I'm desparate for one.

 » It's an intreasting question

It is really. Seeing that MS is the leader among browers and os you'd think they could easily incorporate it into the 360 (you know seeing that internet and web surfing would be part of that whole 360 thing)
I don't see why they didn't. Frankly we don't really care if you have a pc or not. This is about consoles not computers, and if Wii and PS3 have a browser then what's going on with the 360 if they want the whole 360 aspect of a entertainment hub?

 » Stupid, Thats Why!!

If you have Broadband Internet, then its pretty safe to say you already have a computer (with an internet browser)!!. There really hasnt been a time when i was done with a game and been like, "damn, i really wish i could surk the web right now." If you wanna do that use a system that was made to do that. Internet browsing on systems is clunky and stupid. PSP and Dreamcast were horrible and not even worth the time.

There is a browser available for the Xbox 360, if you have Windows MC. Go here http://www.anpark.com/software.aspx to download it, it is free. It also has 10 foot style zooming for the sdtv problem =P. I know it isn't from Microsoft but at least it is available.

Enjoy!

I think it would be pretty cool to have a web browser built into their dashboards. It would be a quick and easy way to check some last minute emails before heading out. For the people who dont have a computer or whos computers are broken it would be a good idea because they could still have internet access.

The current gen sysyems should have enough ram now to surf the net ok....that was PSP's downfall, 4 megs of ram to store pictures and not using the memory stick as a cache was ridiculous of Sony.

I think MS has to work on other things before a browser...like as mentioned above, streaming video from regular ole XP....

I wouldn't cry too much kids, as i'm sure it's just a matter of time....

For the spyware part,if microsoft would consider giving away there monopole on browsers I think they could install a firefox type borwser with good proxy setttings that would let you go on any gaming site.Hotmail access would be feasbale at the least without having to care for spyware.

Not much people that I know have pc and 360. Some of them just can'afford both. Ne ways the old mentality will kill microsoft one day. Thing never last forever!

   by Shatterdome - 2006-10-15
 » Spyware and Virii

Spyware and Virii are a complete non-issue. Anything written to "infect" a PC running XP will not work on the 360. The exploits that are there are in IE in conjunction with XP or some other operating system. They are completely different hardware. Like being afraid windows virii will infect you when you go online with linux....

People would have to write 360 specific virii, but the same could be said of PS3 and wii...

   Re: WIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII (Unregistered) - 2006-10-15
 » lol

The plural of virus is viruses, wtf is virii?

Anyway, yeah, like this guy said, you have to write VIRUSES for the specific operating system/hardware you want it to infect. The 360 does not use the same XP that is for computers, so viruses that infect it won't do anything. I doubt it would use the same IE either, if it happens.

But again, like he said, nothing would stop people from writing viruses for it. It happened to the PSP, why not the PS3/360?

So I believe, in the end, no browser is better. I mean, it'd be nice to have it, because I could look at a FAQ while playing the game, but I do have a printer, and paper isn't exactly expensive. But if it would mean there's a chance I could get infected with a virus written by some 35 year-old virgin nerd living in his Aunt's basement that completely corrupts my hard drive or something, no thank you.
   by chief (Unregistered) - 2006-10-15

has the psp ever had a problem with virus or ppl hacking it? no. all they've done is release fake firmwares to brick ur psp. the ps3's browser will be safe especially if it has linux
