Speculations are running high as to the real failure rate of the Xbox 360, and Capcom's Dead Rising has been dragged along into the riptide.  Apparently, at least as far as his own studio is concerned, Game Daily Biz has been tipped off by an EA employee yesterday that the actual failure rate of the Xbox 360 is much higher than the 3-5% statistics which Microsoft has released. The employee suggested that among the 300 consoles they received, in reality, the failure rate was as high as 30-50%, and being dragged right by the tail of this unpretty observation is Dead Rising, as it appears to be making the problem worse, with many of the consoles getting much hotter than usual when the said game is running.

ms boothThe tipper has also complained about Microsoft's customer service, saying that owning and maintaining an Xbox 360 costs around 2 to 3 times more the price of Sony's PS3 once you factor in repair fees beyond the three-month warranty. In response to this, Microsoft has released a statement, claiming that "The length of warranty and repair charge for unwarrantied consoles is consistent with electronic industry standards. Microsoft prides itself on excellent customer service, and we encourage anyone with a concern about the functionality of their Xbox 360 to contact us at 1 800 4MY-XBOX."

And what of the role of Dead Rising in all this? The guess is that the game can use all three processor cores of the console simultaneously, thereby making the system run hotter than when playing other titles. What makes it worse is that this speculation seems to be supported by actual Xbox 360-Dead Rising horror stories circulating in the internet. Sites like Ars Technica and other gaming forums have posts regarding the same issue from their members.

In one such post, a user has noted that "Dead Rising is making zombies of 360 systems. This game killed my system last night; thankfully, I have a one-year product replacement plan so I already have a replacement, and apparently the demo did the same thing to another member of our forums. This could simply be coincidence, but as always make sure your 360 is well ventilated and nothing is blocking the vents. This game seems to put the hardware through its paces."

Dead Rising
developer, Capcom however, has assured that there is no problem with the game, and that it is not the cause of the console's overheating. "The game works under the specs of the 360 system and was approved by Microsoft. For anyone having issues with hardware, we have referred them to contact Microsoft for hardware support,"  a spokesperson said. Thinking about it, it really is possible, after all, that there really are Xbox 360 titles that use multiple or all three cores of the consoles. In fact, Gotham Racing 3 and Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter have also received similar complaints. So, the hypothesis is that certain Xbox 360 games really just make the system run hotter, without necessarily putting blame on the game title, or on the console itself.

A Microsoft representative though, has shrugged off the claims of the EA-employee-turned-tipper as being just an individual opinion, and that they have no reasons to believe that the claims made were based on any factual data. EA, on the other hand, has not yet broken its silence on this matter as of press time.

My system is still performing beautifully, even with Dead Rising, N3, Madden 07, Oblivion, G.R.A.W., Fight Night, Kameo, Perfect Dark, Amped 3, and any of my other 10 games. People just need to place the 360 in a nice ventilated area, NOT smoke weed, and keep your damn house clean from dust. You want failure rates??? Check this November with PS3. Watch the news...unless "NOSY" payed them off too ;)

 » stupid people

Well i have had my 360 from day one and no problems. I think it more has to do with people putting the system in places where there is no air getting into the system and also leaving the back of your tv stands and stuff in place where your 360 is going to blowing that hot air out is a big deal i always tell people to put the system where it can have air. I also think once the ps3 comes out is is going to have the same problems becasue people are just note use to these high end systems it's like putting a high end computer in a place where there is no air and it will end up doing the same thing it will just ***** out. if people would read the book the system comes with maybe they would have a clue.

» YES! I am not alone! My 360 started freezing only after I got DR

YES finally some news about this. I NEVER had a problem yet with my 360. I keep it very well ventilated and even obsesivly keep the power unit suspended in air for propper air flow around the AC unit.

My 360 started to lock up ever since I got Dead Rising. Sometimes it will play for a while then I will try to boot up again and I get 3 green 1 red ring of light and the box wont start. After a few times of resetting it will boot up, sometimes I will have to play another game for a minute before trying dead rising again because it will freeze if I try to load it again. (usually on start up of system or game load)

It's Sooooooooo lame! So Microsuck thinks a 3 month warranty is just fine, but over 1 year later when a game comes out that fully uses the hardware finally, crashes the sytstem all the time. This is normal and ok????? I am so mad I am a loyal fan who spent like $1500 on xbox 360 junk so far, and my system is starting to freeze when playing a halfway decent game.... Nooooooooooo! Its not fair!!!!!!!!

Post 1 take your spam and shove it. The rest of the posts including 6: Why are you here you freeking morons?

 » Bull

Saying dead rising is the reason why many 360s are dying is such a false statement.

Thats like saying Perfect Dark Zero killed my first 360 only because it started to freeze at first during that game, but later on the freezing just happened anywhere...

Dead rising does freeze sometimes, but not causing the system to die, unless its only been a few months since you had your 360 and then it dies, thats just normal it seems, dont blame your dead rising, blame M$

 » False information

NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, Why is this happening? I have had my 360 from day one as one of my friends as well. We have never, ever had any problems with the 360 playing any of the games mention. The problem is, you have inexperienced gamers buying the 360 and not taking care of it. Keep it in open space and well ventalated. You would put your computer in a spot where it could get any air. Come on people. If we are going to move into the nex gen then we need to be prepared in no how to take care of our stuff. Think about it.

» I like honey on my peanuts.

Well, I've always kept my consoles dust-free in an extremely well ventilated place and I'm still on my THIRD xbox360... Can't complain that much seeing as it didn't cost me a penny for either of the replacements and my latest 360 has never froze once. Not even during the DR demo. I'll just have to wait and see if the full game gives me any complaints.

 » lol

im laughing at all the dumbassess who think they are taking care of thier 360's and therefore it hasnt crashed.
My console has been clear of anything. its got a spot all its own and theres nothign surounding it , yet the *****er crashed and i had to send it in to get a new one.
the only other person i know who bought a 360 gave it back to gamestation because it crashed within a week.
thats two out of two. EA's 30-do percent failure rate is more believable than the 3-5 percent that micro***** are claiming, and its not like EA has any reason to lie about it.
the truth is that the hardware is damn buggy and all of you who think that its the users fault will get yours tooo hahahha....then you will join the darkside.

» Mine freezes occasionally but it doesnt bother me. Havent played DR (only the demo)

Perhaps I shouldn't get dead rising. BTW blaming DR is valid. It could be that there is bad code in the game that causes some infinite loop of processing making it heat up more than it has too.

Well I am not too surprise since this is the first game to actual use all three cores and I doubt MS tested that properly.

BTW those people saying, no that never happened to me, well yeah there are more people with good 360s than there are with bad ones. You should feel bad for them instead of saying they don't know how to handle their machines. MS announce 5% failure rate did you guys actually believe the number was this low?

» UPDATE from Mr. Mad, problem progressed to 3 red lights

uh oh.

now my xbox wont start and im getting 3 orange lights. i didnt have 1 problem until DR and I started getting freezes.

Im not saying DR is at fault neccisarlily, its just that because it uses 3 cores and is a demanding game the xbox is running fullspeed and more suseptible overheating.

I wonder if they forgot to remove the foil on the chip inside my box... or if the first wave of machines are just faulty in some way.

Either way im getting 3 red rings, no startup and im pissed. This never happened until I played DR.... The game has showed me that the 360 hardware can't support games that actually show some sign of being next gen.

Also Texas Hold Em is freeking stupid as hell all the cheaters online ruined the whole game and someone needs to boot all the cheaters from live or please you morons test the game for @#$ like this before you release it!

» LOL, I like that. THe Darkside

Well, its obvious by everyones complaints that there are some flaws with the 360. Fortunately I have not had a problem but hell you might here from me one day. LOL. The Darkside might call me. Anyway, all first consoles from any generation has issues. They will be all corrected in no time. PS3 will have there own issues that gamers will complain about. M$ has the right ideas and the money to put gaming into the next era. As does Sony but you know what IM AMERICAN and I will try my hardest to stick by our companies. Especially when they produce advances like the 360.

 » Wow

Seems legit too. EA has no reason to lie about this. My system from launch has had no problems tho

And before some fa.g comes in here with "PS3 FTW!!!!", if you don't think the PS3 failure rate will be high (especially after the PS2), you are fu*king stupid

Dead Rising is an awesome game, my system does not get hotter while playing it. This is just like that crap awhile ago, where some guys 360 *happened* to crash while he was playing PGR3, so all of a sudden, PGR3 crashes 360s. There's logic for you.

» This is what I don't like about this site.

These are rumors and they put them up as facts. 30-50% is no where near the real failure rate, but neither is 3-5%. Assuming if it is 30-50% why did only one 360 stop working at E305 and none at E306? And do this include devkits from the beta and alpha stages?

 » Heat Issues

The Xbox360 "should" have been designed to tolerate more undesirable locations.

Like most people you place the Xbox360 next to all of your other electronics. The worse place and most commin is above all the other entertainment equipment. The Recievers, DVD players, Set top boxes for all other things and all the heat from those will rise and flow through the Xbox360.

Above all the other electronics is a well ventilated area. Alot of air can pass through but the fact remains that the heat from all your other stuff heats the Xbox360 up till it dies.

The Xbox360 is a poorly designed console. Until Microsoft finally admits to that and makes a new revision, the fault is microsoft, if you cant place the console on carpet, then its not a well designed console.

what the heck does that have to do with anything overheating on your xbox?

 » HA

It's funny seeing fanboys defend their systems. Now after hearing all this bad news about Dead Rising, I don't know if I should buy the game or not. I had my 360 since launch and I haven't had any serious problems. The problems I usally get is when the 360 dashbord freezes when playing a game (mostly PGR3) and it won't come off. And the console has only frozen on me 2 times. So what is the problem, the games or the consoles. Being a 360 owner is a mystery, you won't know what will happen next.

» weed hasn't killed my box

my launch box has been working fine from day one, weed smoke included.

infact of the 4 360s in my house, one needed replacing. it was very laggy even in dash, and was bought shortly before the faulty chips were discovered. the other 3 launch boxes have had no serious problems.

   by Blah (Unregistered) - 2006-08-26

I Hope that this problem is really small and all faulty overheating X360 consoles will be exchanged to new in short time. We all know that all of the consoles had some issues (especially PS2) so what - nothing - if you have a warranty don worry about anything - i'm sure your console would be exchanged for new one and everything will be allright. :)
S**T happens so be sure that have your warranty. :)

Infinite loop of processing.....it's not freaking DR...and this EA dude could be any stupid ***** calling in an anonymous "tip"......wait till the PS3 comes out i'll call in pretending to be f8cking Ken himsself and tell everyone about the 80% failure rate of the PS3....

There have been Many games that use the triple core, and since the 360 is underclocked, if a game runs all 3 cores, then that's as fast as it's getting....no matter how much processing you make it do it's not going to go over a certain point. I've played the demo for hours and I constantly check the heat of my system (Well periodically) and it gets no hotter playing DR then it does playing oblivion, FNR3 or Halo 2......

It just never stops does it.....

 » Place on carpet?

To Vietone, once again another dumb post. A poorly designed console? What about PS3? That thing is just as huge as the OG Xbox. Nintendo? Nah. They're cool people.

Place a console on carpet? You're stupid for doing that. Anyone doing that is stupid. Even during N64/Playstation 1 days, I never done that.

PS2 on carpet? what? no console should be on carpet. NONE. The ventilations are somewhat like a suction tube. Attracts dust like a magnet and not enough breathing room. It doesn't provide enough equilibrium either. YOu gonna put a PS3 on carpet?

Blame Dead Rising? Maybe. It's usually the console's fault though. Anyone buying a console today should always buy a one or two year warranty if available. Any choosing not to is a dumb*****. It's a big purchase.

Dead Rising was definitely rushed. No dialog when talking to people and alot of popup. Save system is bull because there's only one save slot available so it is constantly overwriting. The game doesn't suck though. It's fun. Button layout is not hard to learn. Easy to master. Simple. Kill thousands of zombies, fight psychopaths, save victims, and uncover the cases.
