Condemned: Criminal Origins - Image 1Seems there's going to be another season of video game based movies coming out. Although they are notorious for being horribly adapted onto the big screen, we still hope beyond hope that the next one will give justice to the video game. The announced Condemned movie will be one of those games.

The production team of this new adaptation should ease some worries though. The new Condemned movie will be directed by Tarsem Singh, the director of "The Cell," and will be produced by Jason Hall, co-founder of Monolith Productions and was also one of the creators of the original game. Kurt Sutter, who wrote for "The Shield", wrote the script.

The new movie by Warner Bros. will be titled "The Unforgettable," and will be based on the first game, Criminal Origins, where a detective will be confronted with the supernatural during a criminal investigation.

Condemned 2: Bloodshot is also in development and is to come out on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Condemned: Criminal Origins - Image 1Monolith Productions certainly has a knack for playing with our heads - or scaring us to flicking the lights on - with games like Condemned: Criminal Origins and F.E.A.R. Now a UK retailer PLAY.com is offering Condemned 2, listed to be available by November 11 this year.

Condemned: Criminal Origins was a first person shooter/brawler where players were thrust into the role of an FBA forensic investigator named Ethan Thomas. The storyline was quite reminiscent of Se7en (the serial killer movie with Brad Pitt). There's yet to be any info regarding the sequel but according to the review at PLAY, the game offers "a superb sequel of brilliantly brutal bloody hand to hand brawling..."

At least we know the old gameplay style of Condemned: Criminal Origins was kept. Until Monolith Productions releases any official information regarding the sequel, we'll keep this filed under rumor for now (along with the F.E.A.R. sequel). We'll keep our eyes peeled, stay tuned.

With just a few days to go before Halloween, we thought it'd be a good time to kick back and enjoy this season's scarefest, with a few choice games and an equally spooky game room atmosphere to get your heart pumping, and your feet jumping out of their boots.

For the gaming atmosphere, we recommends the following things to do before your spook-trip:

1. Turn off the lights - This should be a no-brainer. There's a big difference between playing the likes of RE5 or Silent Hill in broad daylight, with the blinds up, and playing at 12 midnight, in your house...alone...on a stormy night...you get the idea.

2. Pump up the volume: From the juicy, squishy sounds of zombies, to the faint, barely-audible whispers of malicious spirits, horror games are just more fun when the sound setting's maxed.

3. The Phone: No need to disconnect it. Rather, park it next to you  as you play, and remember to max its volume too, so you'll be sure to get a coronary the next time it rings while you're at a tense gaming moment.

On to the games after this jump!

Kamoe: Elements of PowerThe first wave of re-released budget titles for the Xbox 360 has been revealed by Microsoft UK officials. These titles will form the first of the Xbox 360's "Classics" range, the UK equivalent of the North American Platinum Hits, where titles that have sold 400,000 units in nine months are repackaged and given a $19.99 price tag.

Each UK Xbox 360 Classic game will be priced at £24.99 ($47) from October 13, which is significantly less than the original retail price of £44.99 ($85) but not as low as the original price of the Xbox Classics at £19.99 ($38). The difference is in keeping with the £10 ($19) increase in next generation console games pioneered by the Xbox 360.

Requirements to make it into the UK Xbox 360 Classics range are still unclear. As for the titles, we've already told you guys that Perfect Dark Zero and Kameo: Elements of Power have made it into the Classics range. For this update, two more have just been added to the list: Condemned and Peter Jackson’s King Kong. A second wave has been promised for spring 2007, with similar schemes promised before the year's end in North America, Asia, Latin America, Japan and Australia.

Punch Jump.com is reporting that Condemned: Criminal Origins for the Xbox 360 will be available at Fry's Electronic Outlets for a vast discount over its original price. According to the article, the game will be sold for 25% off now through Jan. 3 as part of that store's New Year's Sale.

At $44.99, the pricing seems an aggressive attempt by the retailer to move units of the game. With just over a month out, does the pricing reflect a move by retailers to lower the price of games to mirror current-gen titles?

Fry's, with retail stores mostly in the California-area, is known for its hugely-discounted pricing structure, as it faces direct competition from Best Buy and Circuit City, but it would be nice to know that at least a few retailers out there are willing to offer discounts on the increased price of games for next-gen software.

Will others follow?

Condemned: Criminal Origins so scary you may want to sleep with the lights on

Source: Edmontonsun

688817mWhy do we seek out entertainment that makes our palms sweat, our hearts race and fills us with feelings of dread and foreboding? Other than blind dates, I mean.

Because being scared is fun, that's why. And Condemned: Criminal Origins, while it has its flaws, is easily one of the creepiest games in years. Maybe I'm a huge wuss, but at one point I almost stopped playing altogether because I couldn't handle the tension.

OK, yeah, I'm a wuss.

Condemned casts you as FBI agent Ethan Thomas, framed for the shooting deaths of two police officers by a serial killer who is hunting down and slaying other serial killers. What ever happened to my enemy's enemy is my friend?

The plot quickly takes a turn for the weird, as you use CSI-style forensic tools and brute force to trail the killer through a decaying and perpetually gloomy city, fighting psychotic squatters, junkies and other barely human foes who are hellbent on doing you in.

The game's meticulously detailed locales are its biggest selling point, taking you through every form of dark and scary urban blight.

Particularly creepy is the abandoned shopping mall with warped Christmas music playing over the P.A. system (not to mention the mannequins, some of which aren't as lifeless as they appear) and the game's final chapter, where you have to navigate an enemy-infested orchard at night with only a burning board as both your light source and weapon. And oh, will you be missing your flashlight then.

The scares in Condemned tend to be more of a low-level creeping dread variety than Doom 3's cheap monsters-jumping-out-of-closets nonsense. Even when you know something's up, like when your partner asks you to take a second photo of a corpse, this time zooming right in on its face, the resulting BOO! could involuntarily loosen a couple sphincters.

The sound design is also fantastic, especially if you have a surround-sound setup.

It's guaranteed you'll jump out of your skin more than once when you accidentally bump into a shelf and knock a bottle to the floor, or when you hear the shuffling of a homicidal homeless guy creeping up behind you to clock you upside the head with a steel pipe.

And the visuals - holy cow. Although the main characters appear to be carved out of plastic, the environments are so detailed and realistic that you can almost smell the rotting garbage.

If this is what a first-generation Xbox 360 game looks like, I can't wait to see what later games will hold.

Condemned's major shortcoming is its story, which is odd considering the dialogue and voice acting are so solid. But as you progress through the plot and are faced with bizarre premonitions, freaky hallucinations and, at one point, a villain who apparently has some wicked telekinetic powers, you naturally assume it will all be explained in the end.

But it isn't. Other than the novelty of being able to choose whether to end the game on a vengeful or compassionate note, the resolution is a real letdown, never explaining what exactly it was you were pursuing, how it was affecting everyone else in the city and what your own connection to it might be.

But the ending is not too terrible a price to pay for some genuine thrills and chills, down there in the dark subway tunnels, library basements and farmhouse cellars. Where things scurry and whisper and lunge at you with murder in their eyes.

You might even want to play with the lights on. Wuss.

Xbox360logo2Not sure what game to buy next? Matt Slagle from the Associated Press has played 15 of the 18 Xbox 360 launch titles and ranked them from best to worst. 2) Condemned: Criminal Origins
3) Kameo: Elements of Power
4) Perfect Dark Zero
5) Project Gotham Racing 3
6) Peter Jackson's King Kong: The Official Game of the Movie
