Unfortunately, those eagerly awaiting the release of Rage from id Software will be disappointed, and will have to wait a tad longer. That's because id CEO Todd Hollenshead himself has confirmed that the game won't be coming out this year. This was what he said at the latest episode of GameTrailers TV. In fact, there was even a misunderstanding as to whether Todd said "will" or "won't". So, we still got no word on when Rage will be coming out, but project lead Tim Willits did claim that the consoles (PS3 and Xbox 360) versions, as well as the one for the PC, will most likely hit before 2011. Hopefully by then, it's all "fun and done". We'll be keeping you posted on updates for Rage, so keep it locked here. What do you know, we do have new screenshots, too. Dig in, dig in. sounds like it won't be all that good, if it came out in this current gen it could blow us away but when it's postponed till some time up to 2011 the tech and mechanics of the game may no longer be up to scratch, the only thing it can really rely on is a very strong story.

I am sure part of the problem is getting the technology running well on the consoles and PC's that are not top of the line.....
If you've read anything about this engine, it can easly blow us away in the next gen as well...

you misunderstood my comment, what I was saying is the same as what hush404 just put forward, If this game comes out past its time everything else would have caught up and it would look outdated, games that get delayed more then a year outdate fast, because technology is advancing so fast that a top of the range PC is no more after 1 year.

» Game looks good
I watched that episode and his answer was so unclear how he said it that I couldn't understand if he said yes or no when Geoff Keighley asked him if the game is coming out this year.

» typical id?
Honestly, id always seems to impress with it's projects initially but by the time they actually release them the tech isn't nearly as awesome as it would of been years before. Not to mention incredibly resource heavy with no pay off. I look to doom 3 - which looked great, but all the delays meant that other games had caught up in that time and being so resource heavy it took a few years after than to finially max the beast out with pc hardware - which is pointless as better looking games were taking less hardware to run just as good.
I love id and all their work on Doom, Quake etc, and the show super texture thing sounds awesome, but if they take forever with their games, they're going to be surpassed.

@hugh404: I'll go one better than you. I'll go as far as to say that the real problem is not only that they take so long that their tech could become stale ....but that they eventually "give up" in order just to get the game released and running. Let's take Doom3 or Quake3: both had early-release screenshots (as well as leaked Alphas) that far exceeded what they put into the final game. I believe that their engines were still cutting-edge (although perhaps not being very optimized). However, I think that in order to get them to run on *anything* available at the time, they did a last-minute hedge-trimming on all the curved-textures and enhanced shading that they initially wowed everyone with. ....It will be the same again with Rage. If the final game has as much rendering as visible in these screenshots, I'll print this page, put some mustard on it, and eat it. :-)
