Mass Effect deal from EB Games - Image 1

Some of you already know why bagging the limited edition of BioWare's Microsoft Xbox 360 exclusive Mass Effect is worth it, but what most have no idea about is that standing in line for hours in front of the local EB Games/GameStop won't earn anyone the much desired bundle of goodies. According to EB Games' website, the item is only available online.

It seems BioWare fans would love that Galactic Codex: Essentials book, Mass Effect art book, and bonus DVD with exclusive videos, but they'll have to order the package online. There's a note posted on the Mass Effect limited edition page that reads: "This is an ONLINE ONLY Limited Edition. This item WILL NOT be available in stores."

Both standard and limited editions of BioWare's Mass Effect are slated for release this November 20. Might as well pre-order your copy online before that date hits the calendar if you want the extra stuff, because that'll probably be your only chance. It wouldn't be surprising if the limited offer gets sold out soon, and it won't be on shelves later.

BlackSite: Area 51 placeholder - Image 1 For those who have been waiting for the release date announcement of BlackSite: Area 51, we have reports of a possible ETA. Our internet hamsters have found three sites with the same placeholder date for the upcoming video game from Midway Studios Austin.

GameStop and EBGames (naturally) agrees on one placeholder date for BlackSite: Area 51 for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC; Wikipedia also shows that same date. They all show a September release, September 3 to be exact. Hmm... We couldn't find an announcement for the original release date, though ThreeSpeech has also taken a swing for the Europe release: September 14.

We'll keep an eye out for that official announcement, until we find one, we'll pigeonhole this article in the Rumor bin. Stay tuned.

Activision logo - Image 1Details are still pretty sketchy, but it looks like Activision's Value division is making plans to release a new Soldier of Fortune FPS game for the PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. Different this time around will be the choice of studio - Activision has chosen Cauldron (History Channel: Civil War) to be the game's developer in place of Raven Software, the devs who were behind Pay Back's predecessor, Soldier of Fortune II: Double Helix.

That much on game details we know, aside from a posting over at EBGames and GameStop which dates SoF: Pay Back's multi-platform release for November.

SoF: Double Helix, for the guys new to the franchise, is a tactical FPS originally released for Windows PCs and the Xbox console back in 2002. The game was based on other popular FPS' of the time such as Counter-Strike and Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six, and ran under a Quake III engine. Stay tuned in case we receive word on updates for this new title under works.

BioShock Limited Edition, and why it is limited - Image 1

Even though fans of BioShock seem to be in a rootin-tootin' funk on getting the Collector's Edition they wanted from 2K Games and Irrational Games, others felt a bit off when they heard that the publishers struck a deal with EBGames and Gamestop. For some reason, the availability of the Limited Edition was too... well, limited.

So while fans were complaining that they wouldn't be able to use some stock gift certificates to buy the Limited Edition in other stores, 1Up decided to contact Elizabeth Tobey of 2K Games and asked what happened:

Typically we would have started a limited edition six months ago, but even with our looming production deadlines we're trying to listen to the community and fans -- in choosing the contents based on the poll, and in designing the front of the box. With our current timeline, I don't think we could make 500,000 copies of the LE to get out to every retailer just given production times on the figurine alone. So we were looking at a very limited quantity, and we were fortunate that GameStop and EB would pick it up on such a short notice. Given the limited quantity, if we were to spread it out over every retailer we would be looking at maybe two copies per store, and that's not fair to anyone.

She does have a point. Both the PC and Xbox 360 versions of BioShock (and the Limited Edition counterparts) will be simultaneously released on August 21.

If Toys "R" Us has their own bit of Ubisoft promotional discounts, then what's to say EBGames/Gamestop can't either? While we've reported yesterday of Red Steel getting some price shavings, it turns out that yet another game got the similar "super (down)size me" treatment. As things stand now, both Splinter Cell: Double Agent and Red Steel are available (for this week, at least) for US$ 29.99.

Red Steel and Double Agent - $20 off - Image 1

As Siliconera reports, the promo runs from March 2 - 8, so if you haven't gone spying with Sam Fisher, then now's your chance. If, all this time since the game was released, you've been thinking that it wasn't worth getting, then maybe with this offer, you might change your mind. On top of that, the 360-version of this game is getting a price cut too. However, instead of a 20-bucks cut, you'll only be able to save 10 from its original price, thus bringing the 360-version down to US$ 39.99. Hey, anything for a discount, ya?
