Yie Ar Kung Fu graphics comparison - Image 1We've already mentioned that the classic NES and arcade title Yie Ar Kung Fu will be hitting the Xbox Live Arcade tomorrow. With classic re-releases such as this one, we've all come to expect a certain level of graphical enhancements.

Just how extensive are the graphical enhancements for Yie Ar Kung Fu? Xbox 360 news site Xbox360 Fanboy has put up a few comparison shots of the game's XBLA version and the original version.

Gone are the jagged and primitive sprites in the original game (although the XBLA version still retains a level of jagginess). The backgrounds have also been spruced up, getting a new oil painting-like look.

Nostalgia buffs and retro purists will probably prefer the original graphics, if only for the sheer nostalgia factor, but it's also true that the new graphics add a little extra "oomph" to the XBLA version. What about you guys? Which version would you prefer to play?

Leave a comment and let us know.

Xbox Live is fun to play with! With over 10 million downloads, XBox Live Arcade is really keeping people interested in their consoles. Allowing you to download your own bits of nostalgia and demo content adds to the replay factor of the console, but this certainly isn't the end of the development process.

According to Greg Canessa, head of Microsoft's XBLA, there are a bunch of ideas in the works, with the introduction of Fatal Fury Special for XBLA being the first of many.

To drum up more support in Asia for the XBox 360, they're trying to get additional Japanese game devs to offer their games or make new ones for Japanese consumers to download. In addition to Yie Ar Kung Fu as an Asia-specific title, they're hoping to get something along the lines of Shogi (Japanese chess, basically) as well as Q Entertainment's  Lumines Live as downloadable content.

There's also been talk of an online "imports" section, where players can download untranslated Japanese games for them to try out. Quirky titles that normally wouldn't see the light of day in Europe and America would thus be available for niche gamers who don't mind not understanding what they're doing if it means playing something they've always wanted to. In two words, "dating sims."

Canessa also thinks that XNA will definitely be able to augment XBLA in the future once they can create and fully customize their own games for the 360. Since user-generated content is all the rage these days, it seems like a safe bet that things are looking up for XBLA's future on the market.

PacManJapanese arcade game Pac-Man originally appeared in 1979. Almost 30 years later, Mr-Gobble-Everything-On-My-Way is still yellow and of most importance, a force in the industry. Fact of the matter is, a world championship is currently being planned as a form of tribute.

Microsoft, in cooperation with NAMCO BANDAI Games, will host early next year the first ever Pac-Man World Championship. Aside from the announcement, no other details were divulged about the competition. However, it is needless to say that the said event will take place on the Xbox Live Arcade. The top 10 competitors will be sent to New York City to slug it out in the finals.

On a related matter, classics from the '80s and the '90s have conquered the XBLA. The current games were recently announced by Microsoft:
  •     Contra by Konami Corp.
  •     Gyruss by Konami
  •     Dig Dug by NAMCO BANDAI Games
  •     Track & Field by Konami
  •     New Rally-X by NAMCO BANDAI Games
  •     Rush’n Attack by Konami
  •     Ms. Pac-Man by NAMCO BANDAI Games
