Is Paul W.S. Anderson gearing up to make a new Resident Evil film? The answer would be yes, according to film website ShockTillYouDrop. A studio insider supposedly told them that Sony is in fact scheduling a release for September 17, 2010. This would be followed later on by a confirmation of the release date via an internal memo circulating the office.

And so it is over even before it officially took off. Sources close to Bloody Disgusting are reporting that the film adaptation for Castlevania has been sucked out dry and so will no longer push through. Canned is the word, I believe.

Back in October, Paul W.S. Anderson shared that production for the long-planned Castlevania movie adaptation will soon go full swing. Prior to all this, it was believed that the story of the Castlevania movie project will revolve around a knight from Transylvania hiding from the Turkish Army in Dracula's castle.

Well, you can all forget about that as the official plot of the movie has just been revealed. The plot after the jump!

We've been waiting for the movie port of a beloved video game franchise, Castlevania. Well, this bit of news might bring us a step closer to seeing it on the silver screen.

Previous reports that "Alien vs. Predator" director Paul W.S. Anderson will take the director's seat have been busted as he has indeed stepped aside to direct the remake of Death Race instead. Enter Sylvain White, director of "Stomp the Yard". Reportedly, the director will be taking home a seven-figure paycheck for the Castlevania project.

The Castlevania movie is co-produced by Rogue Pictures and Crystal Sky Entertainment and will start shooting this fall. According to Variety, the movie will be shot in South Africa and Romania. Anderson will be penning the script for the movie which centers on the fight between Vlad the Impaler and the Belmont family.

White is enthused about the Castlevania movie, saying, "Most of the vampire films have been present or set in the future, from 'Blade' to 'Underworld,' and I was attracted by the chance to make a dark, epic period movie that almost has an anime feel to it."

The movie based on Konami's video game series will be coming to theaters in late 2008. We'll wait for further developments and keep you posted.

Two quick clarifications: The green light for the Castlevania movie project is still on and Paul W.S. Anderson is still on board. The first one, without a doubt, is good news. On the other hand, the latter can be construed either as excellent or as not-quite-excellent - all depending on your take on the film director's previous work.

Gaming site IGN contacted Anderson and asked once and for all if he is still part of the project and if the movie is still going to push through. Apparently, after reports that the director is no longer working on the Castlevania movie, fans all across the internet assumed that this will eventually jeopardize the project. Anderson told the site,

Both Death Race and Castlevania are set up at Universal. The studio wants to make both films, but obviously there is a scheduling conflict which we are trying to resolve. I am very passionate about Castlevania and whatever happens I will remain actively involved in my role as writer and producer.

Death Race is actually a remake of the 1975 film Death Race 2000. If you're old enough to remember, there is actually a video game called Death Race which was released both on arcade and Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) back in 1976. Take note that the film inspired that video game and not the other way around.

Paul William Scott Anderson is a film director, famous for science fiction movies and for movie adaptations of video games. His body of work includes "Mortal Kombat," "Event Horizon," "Resident Evil" (he also wrote, but didn't direct, the sequels - "Resident Evil: Apocalypse" and "Resident Evil: Extinction"), and "Alien vs. Predator." Anderson was also one of the producers on "DOA: Dead or Alive."

Paul W.S. Anderson was expected to write and direct the upcoming "Castlevania" movie. But not anymore. At least that's what "a very reliable source" told Dread Central, the horror movie and videos news site:

The film, based on the long-running video game franchise from Konami, has been in development hell since it was first announced, but Anderson's always been on as director and writer. Apparently either he didn't like where the project was going or didn’t feel like waiting anymore, because now he's off all together.

Most of Anderson's movies have been love-it-or-hate-it pieces of work. "Soldier" got heavy criticism, and even his financially profitable movies like "Resident Evil" and "Alien vs. Predator" got pooh-poohed by fans of their respective franchises.

Some of us here at QJ.NET believe that not all the criticism against Anderson is fair (some of us think the criticisms against his movies are a bit exaggerated), but we can't help but wonder if there's truth in what Dread Central had to say:

You know a project is in trouble when Paul W.S. Anderson, a man who's spent almost his entire career turning potentially cool movies into steaming piles of pooh, leaves a film.

To the fans of Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow or Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin (both for the DS), the classic Castlevania with Simon Belmont (on Wii Virtual Console), or Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (Xbox Live Arcade), or the countless other versions of Castlevania (over two dozen games in the series!)... you fans may agree with us when we say this: yes, sometimes movie adaptations suck, but we're fans, and we'll be lining up for premiere tickets. Yes, there's going to be a Castlevania movie and yes, we'll let you know everything about the man behind it, but first we'll start with the news that prompted this little article. In a recent interview with horror movie enthusiast website Bloody Disgusting, the man at the helm of the planned Castlevania flick, Paul W.S. Anderson let the following be known about the films plot:

"It will integrate Dracula's origin story with the story of the Belmonts,[There are] a fair amount of references [to the original NES games]." He continues, "[This will be] a whole new spin to 'Castlevania'," and the best part, "The whip is still in it."

So at least we know Dracula's in the movie, and we know we'll see the Belmonts, and whip, calming stuff. What's a little alarming is where he Anderson remarks that "This will be a whole new spin to Castlevania." Without getting too worked up over a simple comment, it's always a scary proposition when a Hollywood filmmaker decides to put a new spin on cherished time honored material, mario-bros/2427" id="tag" title="">Super Mario Bros. The Movie anyone?  Paul W.S. Anderson has made a career of directing videogame movie adaptations, and while he's hardly a remarkable film maker he's had some reasonable success... and his name doesn't end in Boll. With that said, let's have a look at Anderson's relevant filmography, judge how closely the movies followed the subject matter, decide how successful they were and see if we can map a course of prediction for Castlevania: The Movie, shall we?
