Tired of FPS or RTS games set in World War II? Japan has the wackiest ideas as usual, coming up with Operation: Darkness for the Xbox 360. Developer and publisher Success Corp., known for a slew of Japanese titles (only a few like Metal Saga and Zoo Keeper reached the west), took a new approach to WWII by adding werewolves, zombies, vampires, dragons, and other creatures to the mix.
If that doesn't sound good enough, it's also amusing how plenty of characters in Operation: Darkness look anime-esque while some (especially Hitler and his goons) are very realistic. Did we mention that the characters have special powers too? Some can summon a giant hand to crush enemies on the battlefield, while others transform into monsters you'd never see in other WWII-based games. Not much is known about Operation: Darkness, but we're certain that it'll be a fun turn-based strategy game. Yeah, you read that right. In the spirit of Disgaea, Final Fantasy Tactics, and everything along those lines, is this entry that should pique the interest of many. For those who can't imagine how the Japanese can twist WWII, here's a trailer with some snippets of gameplay footage. |

Success Corp.'s Operation: Darkness finally got a release date and a rating that is most surprising. But before we talk about that, we believe a refresher is in order because the title will only be released in Japan and there's a possibility that some of you haven't heard about this title at all. Operation: Darkness is an original IP and its gameplay is a mix between strategy and RPG. It takes place during World War II, but this is not your ordinary war game. In this title, the realities of war are bordered by mythical fantasies. Soldiers will be accompanied by fantasy creatures such as werewolves, dragons and fairies. Anyway, our Japanese friends should get their hands on Operation: Darkness by October 11. The game carries a CERO D rating, the Japanese equivalent of an "M" rating slapped by the Entertainment Software Ratings Board (ESRB) on a video game. If we are not mistaken, only a few RPGs in Japan have received a rating like this. Actually, the CERO D rating makes us want Operation: Darkness even more. Sadly, there's still no announcement if it will be released outside Japan. Oh, and did we say that it has Xbox Live support for four people? Ugh, we want this game... |

It's a warzone, alright. There'll be jet fighters flying off above you, and soldiers deftly maneuvering their strategies to get a better aim at their foes. But what's this? Giant polar bears dressed impeccably in a white general's suit and fire-breathing dragons? Just what kind of a warzone is this, exactly? This would be Operation: Darkness. Yup, it's the World War II-inspired RPG with the twist. And there sure is nothing like it. Only here will you see the harsh realities of war entwined with the mythical world of fantasy. Oh, but it won't be just monsters and soldiers here. There'd be beautiful ladies as well. Nothing beats having 'em ladies in a war-torn field, eh? Success Corp.'s Operation: Darkness still has a TBA release date tagged to its name. But not to worry; we'll be sure to let you in on the know as soon as we ourselves get to it. |

I cannot believe this is the first article to be posted for this game's blog! (Woot! First post! Lol!) Anyway, this game sure is underrated. Operation Darknes: Tactics is a strategy RPG from Success Corp. And yes, it is set in the period of World War II. Not another war genre, you say? This ain't just another "WWII clone". It's main meat is that it's more of a choose your own ending kind of story. As Spencer Yip over at siliconera.com describes it, it's more like a "what if storyline". Heading the pack is one Edward Kyle, a local of London who became witness to Germany bombing his hometown. Igniting hatred and the desire to get revenge, Kyle joins the army, and later moves up to join the SAS squad. Now, it's up to you to decide where your army goes to next, and the kind of combat you'd make. So there. Now that we've got your attention, we'll definitely fill this blog up some more. Meanwhile, check out these screenshots. More screens after the jump! |
