Too Human

It has been a while since we have featured something about Silicon Knights' game for the Xbox 360, Too Human. In our earlier report, we mentioned the problems that the game encountered at E3 -- "there was much more aliasing, and the frame rate was pretty much unplayable. It really ruined the experience and I think a lot of people who played it came away with somewhat negative impressions despite all the promise the title holds just because it looked so rough."

Hopefully, the guys over at Silicon Knights will be able to make things work come the game's release date, but for now, Denis Dyack - president of Silicon Knights - gamely answered some inquiries with regards to the game. When he was asked about the framerate and camera issues that the game encountered during its E3 stint, Mr. Dyack said that it was a domino effect of sorts, starting from "significant technology issues with the engine that we licensed" which pretty much affected everything in the E3 build.

He said that issues will be worked out and fixed well before the game comes out. "During game development, a game is always in flux and depending on when you choose to look at game you can get a very different impression of it. E3 might not have been our finest hour, but the final game is all that counts." And just to let you know, their target framerate is "30 fps".

He also confirmed rumors about the possibility of wiping out an entire room of enemies without ever touching the ground. He claims that "some of the game’s designers can stay hovering in the air indefinitely, providing there are enough enemies around them. I haven’t gotten there yet, but it is definitely possible." And he also mentioned that Marketplace demos have great possibilities and they would like to do one before the game comes out, so you guys better watch out for that. Also, according to him, for now, they have no plans of supporting the upcoming Xbox Live Vision camera.

Too Human will also take full advantage of Xbox Live as Silicon Knights "plan on doing achievements with both these ideas and much more actually." He also added that the current DVD-9 medium is not holding them back and the current disc size is much larger then what developers had with Cube. More details will come up about the game "the next time we feel the game is ready to show."

FF:XI

The one game for the Xbox 360 that didn't have achievements, Final Fantasy XI, finally receives its own set of points to add to your gamerscore. The game has 32 secret achievements that add up to the usual retail 1000 gamerpoints. The update for the game today unlocked the ability to get the achievements and now when your playing FF:XI it will no longer say playing PlayOnline Viewer.  According to PlayOnline:

After fulfilling certain requirements, players will be able to speak with title-changing NPCs to unlock Xbox 360 “achievements.” In the case where players have no titles available to change, they will be unable to unlock any achievements.

So, if your one of the many people playing Final Fantasy XI on the 360 you try to be one of the first to find out what the secret achievements are (maybe it's for raising a chocobo?). On a side note from the update the game is now compatible with 1024x768 screen resolution.

PreyWhile technology is supposed to make life simpler, it often backfires making life actually more complicated. Take Prey for instance. Typical of a multi-platform title, the question you have to grapple with isn't just to buy or not to buy. But also, do you  buy the PC version or Prey for Xbox 360. The question, of course, is valid only if you own a PC and an Xbox 360.

As usual, where there is a dilemma there's some folk who are bound to go find out for themselves. In this case it's the team at Gamespot. They decided to put the two Prey versions to test to see which is the predator and which is the prey. According to the team, PC-based games are traditionally superior to consoles especially for the FPS genre. Mainly because the mouse-and-keyboard standard presents better control than a gamepad plus PC graphics outclass the consoles'.

The arrival of the Xbox 360 is changing all that by giving the PC a run for its money. See what we mean by new technology making things more complicated? To make things less complicated, here are the GameSpot score card for the two species of Prey.

Prey (Xbox 360) The Good:
Prey (Xbox 360) The Bad
  • Costs $10 more than the PC version.
  • Any user-generated content cannot be used.
Prey (PC) The Good:
  • Cheaper retail price.
  • Better graphics when played on high-end PCs.
  • More potential thanks to additional content via user mods and maps.
Prey (PC) The Bad:
  • No native support for widescreen resolutions.
  • Multiplayer designed to only officially support eight players.
The bottomline: Prey PC is great on high-end machines. But the Xbox 360 version is better for gamers who don't want to upgrade their PC.

Xbox Live Dash

Last September Microsoft CEO Robert Batch predicted that around 50 percent of all Xbox 360 owners would go online, in a prediction to improve the 10 percent of original Xbox owners that took their consoles online using the Xbox Live service. Figures released yesterday by Microsoft show that not only have Batch's predictions been met, they've even been exceeded.

Microsoft has managed to get 60 percent of Xbox 360 owners across the world hooked up and using Xbox Live, according to Xbox Live group marketing manager Aaron Greenberg. The company's free Xbox Live Silver service is expected to have attracted most customers to hook up their 360 to the Internet. Although it does not allow online gameplay, players can still post achievements and download demos. The spread of high-speed broadband access has also had an effect on the number of 360's connected to the internet.

Greenberg said "Logic says it will come down at some point, but the fact that it's continuing to grow and we have the majority of our users connected online has really changed the gaming experience this generation."

TDU

Much has been said about this game from Atari due out this summer. Although, the featured cars may steal the show, the core component is gameplay. In this article we will touch on achievements within the game.

Test Drive Unlimited boasts of more or less 46 different achievements. There are a lot of ways on how to earn these achievements. The best part is you can do so without even plugging in your Ethernet. Nine of these achievements can be unlocked through bringing home gold medals in single-player time, race and speed challenges. Another four by successfully completing missions such as helping drop dead gorgeous supermodels get to their destination without unruffling their numerous shopping bags or delivering packages within strict time limits.

A tourist achievement is possible by driving distances of 30, 200, 400, 1,000, and 5,000 miles during your time on the island. And if you've travelled all the roads in the island, you gain explorer achievement. Of course, there's also the most obvious of the lot which is the collector achievement, where you'd have to be the proud owner of the most luxurious vehicles like Ferrari, Lamborghini, Mercedes-Benz, Aston Martin, Ford and Chevrolet. This achievement is not only limited to cars but extends to bikes and clothing.

And what is a racing game without achievements gained through making other players eat your dust. Victories in ranked multiplayer races are good for three achievements, and after unlocking an achievement for creating or joining an online car club, you'll have the opportunity to unlock another one by winning three interclub competitions. And if you're feeling creative, you can unlock another achievement by sharing three custom challenges that you've designed.

Are you ready to race yet? This game developed by Eden Games, will retail for $59.99 and is Atari's saving grace.

Crackdown PackshotReal Time World's Crackdown for the Xbox 360 is scheduled to come out this fall, and it is only natural for people to talk about it. The game has been receiving unfair comparisons with GTA because at first glance, both games have a lot of parallelisms with each other -- both are set in a fictional city, you can drive whatever you can get your hands on, and you can shoot at anything and anyone. But, from there on, these two are poles apart.

If you got used to being the troublemaker during your stint with GTA, you might need to get a little used to the fact that when you play Crackdown, you'll be the good guy -- a cop who'll shoulder the gargantuan task of cleaning up the streets.

Also, every good deed of yours is aptly rewarded -- your character will evolve and be more powerful, plus you get rewards and achievements which is a feather in your character's cap. We have given you some of the game's screens, some info about it, and interviews from the game's developer himself, David Jones. Now, we present to you Crackdown's packshot.

overall Test Drive Unlimited Champion

Atari has just released new info on their upcoming racing title, Test Drive Unlimited. Promising to provide gamers the ultimate experience of racing, customizing, and even crashing world’s hottest cars and bikes made by the likes of Lamborghini, Ferrari, Ducati, Aston Martin, Pagani, etc. - a privilege used to be reserved for the Hiltons, Lohans, and Lebrons of the world. In this press release, juicy info regarding the title's single player game features were revealed. They are:
  • Collect and drive more than 90 of the world’s most exclusive dream cars around the vast tropical road system spanning the Hawaiian island of Oahu (without having to resort to the alibi of "there's a paparazzi chasing me" after they chrash it).
  • On or offline, gamers can take on the challenge of boosting cred and bank balance any time their virtual spoiled self wants it.
  • Play like you're a mechanic of MTV's Pimp my Ride, cause in this game you're given the freedom to customise not only your rides, but your character as well. You can even set up your characters home to a variety of places. Let your imagination run wild and create a Madonna/50 Cent hybrid.
  • Single player challenges include winning all the preset races against up to seven bots, time challenges, speed trap challenges, missions to deliver goods, hitchhikers, and vehicles with good driving and within time limits, and even pulling a top model.
  • If you're more of a collector rather than an inborn Michael Schumacher, please yourself by owning more than 50 cars, 3 bikes, 15 houses, and even having a wardrobe packed with 10 or more Marc Ecko and Ben Sherman outfits - now that's life!
  • Game boost of a very realistic, thus unpredictable, AI for your rival driver. You won't be able to guess what he'll want to do next, aside that he'll race you as hard as anyone can.
  • The progress that players make both on and offline in Test Drive Unlimited all counts towards their profile, with many achievements, such as racking up more than 10,000 miles on the clock, possible online, offline or by using a combination of both.
  • The opportunity of being the grandaddy of racing. Master all online multiplayer and single player challenges and carry the overall Test Drive Unlimited Champion title.
Now, can you feel the need for speed? Don't get caught up with the TDU fever too much, it won't be out until September 2006. So for now, let's content ourselves with watching those sleek cars from afar...
