Xbox 360 homebrew - Image 1Ready for a lot of hardcore techie talk? During the recent 24th Chaos Communication Congress in Berlin, Germany, Felix Domke and Michael Steil went into a detailed discussion about the different levels of security on consoles and handhelds during the past few years. They focused mostly on the silicon-based security system for the Xbox 360, and they also talked about the intricacies of today's security systems on the consoles and a lot of other insights on the homebrew scene.

Watch the very informative video of the lecture right after the jump!

HomePlug products allow networking over home electrical wiring - Image 1

Catering to the Xbox 360 and the PC, the HomePlug AV add-on by LinkSys provides broadband home networking through your power outlet, allowing both current and bandwidth to flow through your electrical wiring. This time around however, Intellon has officially announced in a press release a new integrated circuit that does exactly that same thing.

The INT6000 HomePlug AV IC are integrated directly to your Xbox 360's power supply, or that of your AMD LIVE! PC, allowing both platforms to stream HD video and high quality audio to each other, over you existing home wiring. Contributing to AMD LIVE's open-platform approach, HomePlug brings interconnectivity between Microsoft's next-gen console and an AMD LIVE! PC running Windows Vista.

Like their ordinary HomePlug devices, Intellon is certain that additional wiring will no longer be needed. The technology is claimed to provide full Quality of Service (QoS) support and guarantee, as well as the added stability and robust features to discourage doubt of the product's capabilities.

A full technical demonstration of the product will be revealed in an AMD presentation, "Whole Home Media Access over Mixed Topologies," to be held in May 17, 2007 at WinHEC.

AMD - Image 1TGDaily reports that AMD currently has plans to bring "Xbox quality graphics to handheld devices." AMD plans to do this by utilizing their next gen mobile graphics technologies.

While specific details have yet to be released, AMD is reportedly "working with content developers now in preparation for the arrival of phones." These should be made available to handset manufacturers through "discrete media processors as well as through IP licensing agreements with semiconductor suppliers."

A developers toolkit that includes OpenVG 1.0 and OpenGL ES 2.0 support has already been released. The toolkit will also incorporate the same Unified Shader Architecture found in the Xbox 360. There's still no word yet on which companies have already signed up, but keep checking back here on QJ for more updates.

CES 2007

The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has announced the winners of its 58th Annual Technology and Engineering Emmy Awards. This year is the first time that the Technology and Engineering Emmy Awards was held at the International CES.

Needless to say, a lot of companies related to video games were quick to announce that they received the said award. Given that we're in a middle of a console war right now, anything that could help add to bragging rights seems very welcome.

The list of recipients include Microsoft, AMD, Sony, Nintendo, and Nvidia for their contributions to everything tech and gaming.

omegame1The avenues of indie gaming development keep on changing and branching out, and often, developers, artists, and programmers get their ideas from third party support. A good example of this is Menus Master from Omegame, which is a video game user interface (UI) authoring toolchain which is tailored for Xbox 360 games.

This toolchain allows users to reduce the time needed to create complex UIs with the use of 2D and 3D front-ends, in-game UIs and heads-up displays (HUD). With Menus Master, a  programmer can easily author an interface before it gets integrated in the game itself in a manner that is almost child's play.

The product bundle contains Menus Master Studio, Menus Master Data Generator and the Menus Master Development Kit, all of which are necessary for quick UI creation, game production, and UI game integration in Xbox 360 development. In case you still need a bit of help or inspiration though, the main site lets you download free information regarding a broad range of topics, and the documents come in PDF and WMV formats.

We think this is a great tool for Xbox 360 developers as it would allow them more time to actually start creating interfaces and content, and less time crunching hard code. This tool is now available to interested 360 developers, and just contact Omegame for more information or to start setting up an evaluation for Menus Master.
