David Perry: E3 is lost, Sony needs new strategies - Image 1A few months ago, Acclaim's David Perry said some pretty harsh words that got him into the headlines, saying that E3 is broken and an embarrassment, and that Sony has no chance of making money on the PlayStation 3.

Apparently he wasn't through speaking his mind. This guy gets into the news more often for what he says than for his games. More bashing from Perry in the full article.

The fifth Xbox 360 Weekend Warrior - Image 1Last week's 360 Weekend Warrior was basically an E3 extravaganza, filled with big-name news and announcements. This week is a lot more subdued, as we deal with the aftermath of E3, as well as talk about some notable new things in store for our favorite games.

Oh, and we talk about perceived racism and videogame legislation as well. Find all of it after the jump!

Nintendo Wii video game news - Image 1Yet another one boards the "hate E3" wagon. David Perry, founder of Shiny Entertainment and chief creative officer at Acclaim, has called the event "broken," "stupid," and an "embarrassment." More after the "read more" link.

Will be glad to see you back in action, Jimmy. - Image 1You can't kill the messi earthworm. Pro-G UK's people at GDC 2007 had a talk with David Perry, Shiny Entertainment's founder, about the fate of the world's mightiest invertebrate. The reply: "We reformed the (Earthworm Jim) team and they were all into it."

Here's where the story gets thrown for a loop: no mention of the last concrete Earthworm Jim project, which was, or is (maybe) the PSP Earthworm Jim. That project's status might as well be in limbo, given that Foundation 9 acquired the Shiny dev from Atari, but the Earthworm license stayed behind. Without any new news on development in that title, we don't know where it is.

Pro-G didn't mention any specific details about how Shiny, Foundation 9, or even Atari is involved in here - just the reformed team. Based on his quote, any Earthworm Jim title they're thinking of is still in the pre-production stage: "Trust me, all the original Earthworm Jim guys are still very interested in the whole idea; just know that it'll happen eventually." Must be something new, indeed. But we're filing this story in PSP Updates, too, just in case there's an (eventual) connection.

Second loop: Pro-G mentioned that there were no concrete details about the game's release or "on which platforms it may grace". Which means that they might be starting from scratch, and, who knows, may be trying to infest next-gen consoles with worms (hence the multipost).

The only other option is for Perry's team to pick up work on the PSP Earthworm and get it back up to speed, but again, no mention was made of the project (hey, maybe they can do two Jims at once, maybe...). Anyway, until more concrete details are offered by the Perry team, guess the only next-gen worms to worry about are in Worms HD.

Driving games recipie for driving disaster? Oh please, when will this ever end? - Image 1Oh for Pete's flying sake...

BBC reports on a little thousand-man survey conducted by British driving school BSM that shows what they, BSM, claim is an "indisputable link" between playing driving games and then driving faster and harder. (We've been here before, haven't we?) Here are the results from the BSM survey which prompted that "indisputable" comment:
  • 27% of motorists ages 16-24 admitted to more risk-taking on the road after a gaming session;
  • A quarter of the drivers said that they felt like they were in a racing simulation while driving for real;
  • 34% of respondents thought that racing games "can improve real-life driving ability";
  • Two in five respondents (around 40% of the pool) thought that games "improve reflexes" (which is, in any case, a real-world driving skill, too);
  • And just over half the regular gamers pass their driver's test for the first time, compared to only 45% of infrequent (or non) gamers.
In a critical reply to this survey, acclaimed games designer David Perry said that it's not the gaming before the driving that mattered, but the emotions behind the wheel that dictate the driver's fate. "Anything that affects your emotions will affect how you drive. The guy in front, the music on the stereo... those are the things that make you speed up, not a game you played an hour ago."

Of course, the BBC said that Perry is currently working on a driving game (hmm... guess it's not the "Top Secret Project" then). But you know what? We'll just go back to what we said a while back, and agree with Perry: if you can't amp down, don't rev up (yeah, it used to say "gas up", but "rev up" is more relevant). You'd be surprised how many of the best racers in gaming and real-life can be ice-cold analytical behind the wheel - they have to be to maintain their edge.

And one more thing: indeed, gaming can help improve reflexes, and (if designed well) even introduce the uninitiated to some of the basics concepts of driving. Still, driving games are no substitute for driver's ed.
