Midway logo - Image 1Thanks to the game spearheaded by John Woo, Midway Games moved up the ranks to take 35% of Europe's market share after Stranglehold (Microsoft Xbox 360, Sony PlayStation 3, PC) reached target sales numbers earlier than expected. Stranglehold remains on the top ten of UK's best selling Xbox 360 titles, and gives Midway a bright future for 2008. "Our goal was to get to 35 per cent in 2008. We've gotten there this year," said Midway CEO David Zucker after crediting Stranglehold as one of the major factors.

Midway Logo - Image 1After announcing their revenue report for the third quarter Midway, one of the major game publishers who recently released Stranglehold for the Xbox 360 and PC, recently announced that they have successfully solved their PS3 programming issues. Midway's CEO David Zucker stated that they managed to fix the problem during the development process for both Stranglehold and Unreal Tournament 3.

Midway is also sticking to their current plan regarding Epic Games' Unreal Tournament 3, and that is to ship Unreal Tournament 3 for the PC this month, with the PS3 version to follow soon. However, Zucker said that they currently are sticking to the 2008 release of the game for the Xbox 360.

Midway posts heightened gains, losses for Q3 2007 - Image 1

Though ironic in a sense, publisher Midway Games has come up with increased losses and revenues at the end of the company's third quarter for calendar year 2007. Data derived from the company's financial reports since September 30, 2007 highlights that Midway garnered a year-on-year rise from US$ 27.5 million to US$ 36.7 million in revenue. It was noted, however, that the company also gained a US$ 0.31 loss per diluted share from last year's US$ 0.22 per.

The publisher's main performance highlights were bannered by the previously released Unreal Tournament 3 demo and the release of John Woo's Stranglehold for the Xbox 360 and PC. It was noted that the UT3 demo continued to be one of the top 2 downloaded games on popular PC file portal FilePlanet since October 12.

Midway Games forecasts a great future for the company's overall revenue come the end of the company's fourth quarter on December 31, 2007. The imminent worldwide release of Epic Games' Unreal Tournament 3 (Microsoft Xbox 360, PC, Sony PlayStation 3) on Microsoft Windows, Linux and Mac OS X is highly anticipated, among other mainstream titles such as BlackSite: Area 51 (PC, Xbox 360), Stranglehold (PS3), and Hour of Victory (PC).

Casual and other mainstream titles include Cocoto Racing for the DS, The Bee Game for the GBA and DS, Ultimate Mortal Kombat for the DS, Aqua Teen Hunger Force: Zombie Ninja Pro-Am for the PS2, Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends for the DS, and Game Party and Cruis'n' for the Wii.

To that end, the Chicago-based publisher foresees a hike up in revenue to US$ 80 million for the fourth quarter, with a US$ 0.21 loss per basic and diluted share. Overall, Midway lowers its annual target due to slow sales of the PlayStation 3 and "movement" of Nintendo DS and Wii titles.

"We remain confident that our technology strategy and product plan position us to grow both revenue and market share as we move into the heart of this console cycle," said Midway president and CEO David Zucker. He concludes that with a strong lineup of releases in the coming months, Midway will be able to accelerate its growth for 2008.

Midway financial woes delays UT III, affects BlackSite: Area 51 shipment - Image 1Midway Games released an official statement concerning its financial status and some of its most anticipated titles this holiday season. It seems that the delay for the PS3 build of Stranglehold (also on Xbox 360 and PC) is just the beginning as more titles are being pushed back.

First of all, Midway said that it is lowering the total expected sales for BlackSite: Area 51 because of "the adverse impact of the split shipment between the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3 systems." There was no word, however, regarding the PC build of the next-gen FPS title.

Aside from that, the PlayStation 3 version of Unreal Entertainment III is also being pushed back to Q1 of 2008. The game was originally expected to ship to retail stores together with the PC build this November. Given these developments, we are uncertain if the timed PS3 exclusivity holds or both the PS3 and Xbox 360 build will ship together.

"While we regret that these delays will cause us to lose some valuable holiday sales in the near term as well as shift revenue for some of these titles out of 2007 and into 2008, we remain confident that our technology strategy and product plan position us to grow both revenue and market share," said Midway Games CEO and President David F. Zucker.

Midway Games originally anticipated a US$ 225 million full year revenue at the end of this year. However, the company has now lowered its expectations to just US$ 170 million.
