Yamaoka - Image 1 Famed Japanese game music composer Akira Yamaoka of Konami's Silent Hill fame has announced that he is currently working on a new project. He has expanded his role to overall supervision and is now exercising a great deal of creative control on game design. He has also finished work on the anticipated thriller Silent Hill 5 for the Sony PlayStation 3 and the Microsoft Xbox 360, a game whose musical score he describes as Dolby-quality, but not quite revolutionary.

A lot of people give themselves gifts for their birthday, no big deal. Now as for one particular Xbox 360 owner, he got himself something a lot of racing fans can only dream of: the perfect racing set-up for the Xbox 360.

This set up involves an Xbox 360, a racing wheel, leather seats, a Dolby 5.1 surround sound speaker set-up, and three Samsung HDTVs linked together. When we got a glimpse of the picture he sent in to Gizmodo, our jaws literally dropped to the floor. How he was able to split the feed into three monitors is still a mystery to the guys at Gizmodo and to us as well.

Anyway, here's the picture of his place so you can start planning on how you're going to start saving up for an awesome setup like this one.

You've got to be kidding me. MIDI? Next-gen? - Image 1No, this isn't GamePro's April Fool's Day special (for crying out loud, it's only MARCH!). They report on a GDC session where Dolby (which puts the Dolby in Dolby DTS) announced that their vision of the future of audio in games will be MIDI.

Insert tinny MIDI Final Fantasy VII victory theme here - no, not that pre-recorded synth in X.

They weren't kidding, it seems. The Dolby reps said that today's processing power in computer processors means that they can make MIDI a little more "real." They claim that with next-gen, MIDI can attain a fidelity comparable to or even better than dedicated synthesizers. And it will be smaller and faster to load than the pre-recorded stuff (one reason why Nobuo Uematsu went MIDI with FFVII).

Final advantage: because it's MIDI, and not pre-recorded, it can be programmed to be interactive - to sync with and react to in-game events and game flow - and the improved MIDI should still be able to deliver "a sound similar to an orchestrated score." And maybe still control a Roomba vac, too.

This we have to hear. No really, this we have to hear.

Every Extend Extra Extreme - Image 1

Yesterday, we told you that Q Entertainment has an Xbox Live Arcade title up their sleeves and that they'll reveal this title in the ongoing Game Developers Conference. Well, the word is out guys, turns out this new title is Every Extend Extra Extreme (E4) and will be a "continuation" of their hit psychedelic puzzler, Every Extend Extra (E3).

WorthPlaying was able to score some details on E4, and according to them, the main goal of the game will be to self-destruct and aim for massive chain reactions of explosions. You'll have an unlimited number of lives but make sure you choose the perfect timing to detonate to inflict as much damage as possible. Other features of the game include:
  • high-def graphics with Dolby 5.1 surround sound support
  • full suite of online leaderboards, achievements, and gamerscore
  • gameplay modes:
    • S4, Wiz ur Muzik – play to your own favorite tunes from a CD and enjoy a customized E4 experience.
    • H4, Versus Live - online multiplayer over XBL
That's about all the details that's been revealed so far, but we will keep you posted as Q (hopefully) divulges more details on E4 at the ongoing GDC. Every Extend Extra Extreme is said to be slated for release later this year on XBLA.

DemonWare - Image 1Looks like Activision is going all out to improve the quality of games in its current and future roster. The other day, we reported that the publisher signed an agreement with Dolby Laboratories, Inc. involving Dolby Lab">Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound.

This time we heard that the company just acquired DemonWare. People might be hearing about DemonWare for so long, they didn't even bother to ask what the company is really all about.

FYI, it  is a maker of network middleware. Its most important products include high-performance state synchronization C++ programming framework The State Engine and Matchmaking+, which provide services for multiplayer games such as matchmaking, user profiling, and gaming statistics.

Now, online sites Electric News and Games Industry are both reporting that Activision has indeed acquired DemonWare for an estimated sum of no less than EUR 15 million or roughly around US$ 19.5 million.

An official announcement is expected to be released soon.

CES 2007

Dolby, a company famous among gamers for Dolby Digital 5.1, a technology used to deliver vivid sound on the Sony PlayStation 3, and the Microsoft Xbox 360 (don't forget Dolby Pro Logic II for the Nintendo Wii),  presented several technologies at the ICES that should deliver expansive sound experiences in consumer devices. The technologies demonstrated included the following:

Dolby Headphone – a technology that is set to offer virtual 5.1 surround over regular stereo headphones
Dolby Virtual Speaker – a technology that should provide compelling surround sound experience using any regular pair of stereo speakers
Audistry – a technology that offers a suite of audio enhancements that give a big boost to TV sound
Dolby Volume – a technology that promises to allow television makers to address to problem of having inconsistent loudness in broadcast TV.

Perhaps what is most pertinent to gamers though is that Dolby announced that it is collaborating with Freescale Semiconductor, Inc., to create and market a new category of game peripherals designed to deliver superior audio. At CES 2007, Dolby and Freescale demonstrated a new reference design for an Xbox 360 accessory cable that supports Dolby Headphone and Dolby Virtual Speaker.
