Canadian hardware, software sales: NPD Group spills game industry numbers for September 2007 - Image 1The NPD Group has just released the retail sales numbers of Canada's video game industry, and for the month of September, hardware sales of the Microsoft Xbox 360 have jumped to 51,200 units. The rise was attributed to the September 25 release of Bungie Studios' Halo 3, published by Microsoft. Over all, the game industry was reported to have met a 96% increase in total sales from US$ 66.2 million to US$ 129.7 million, year on year.

Throughout the retail sale categories that the NPD report covered, console hardware sales have more than doubled for the month alone, confirming Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter's prediction. The revenue hit a high of 244% from US$ 13 million in September last year to US$ 44.7 million in September this year.

With it, console software sales rose 79% year-on-year, from US$ 27.8 million to US$ 49.9 million in revenue. Handhelds in contrast performed in the lowest margins, though both software and hardware revenue increased according to NPD's numbers.

Handhelds sold in the nation hiked up 29% from US$ 9 million in September last year to US$ 11.7 million this year, while handheld video games rose by a slim 2% from last year - US$ 9.5 million to US$ 9.7 million. The hardware sales ranked by most unit sales for the month of September stood as:
  • Microsoft Xbox 360 - 51,200
  • Nintendo DS - 45,000
  • Nintendo Wii - 42,900
  • Sony PSP - 2,200
  • Sony PS2 - 16,500

Because we can't get enough racing games, THQ will be giving us Cars Mater-National as a sequel to Cars. Some of you guys probably grabbed Cars recently off the budget bin for the PS2, PSP, and Xbox 360, but it's never too soon to take a look at its successor.

Well, what can we say? This is Cars, so there are wacky vehicles with faces and personalities. The video below shows us snippets of the gameplay, showing off the various environments players will be competing in. There are also some sweet ramps and little tricks that clearly tag the title as an arcade racer.

The game is set to appear on the PS3, Wii, 360, PS2, DS, and GBA this autumn. For those interested in adding a new decent looking racer to your library, check out the gameplay montage embed.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix shipped - Image 1

An official announcement made available recently called out news that the game adaptation of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix has shipped across North America and should also be available in Europe by June 28. The game developed under the watchful eyes of Electronic Arts is now available on almost every current platform imaginable.

Boasting a non-linear gameplay feature, the title will allow players to explore the innards of Hogwarts Academy and uses an intuitive spell-casting gesture system that should please gamers on the Nintendo Wii. The game will boast the authenticity of the movie, from locales to characters, so we won't spill the story details until everyone's comfortable with the motion picture release.

Otherwise, the EA UK-developed game is rated E 10+ for Everyone (10+) and should be available for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 for a suggested retail price of US$ 59.99, the Nintendo Wii for US$ 49.99, the PlayStation 2 and PSP for US$ 39.99, and the Nintendo DS, GBA, PC and Mac for US$ 29.99. Another ported version for your game-capable mobile phone is also slated for release, although no price has been named as of press time.
