Not every gamer loves books, but we reckon just about anyone who can read and hold a control pad would like to scan through this one, at the very least. The Guinness Book of Records will officially unveil the Videogame Edition of the famous annual book to cater to every game trivia nut out there. The book will launch at the London Book Fair on April 16 to 18 and is officially titled "The Guinness World Records - Videogame Edition 2008". The book will contain all the game information conceivable from record game scores, characters, game sales, record times and how much game industry insiders make in a year. "The news that Guinness World Records has decided to produce a book devoted to games is great for both gamers and the industry. It's another boost for the profile of gaming, and I'm very much looking forward to getting started," says Games Industry editor Ellie Gibson. Guinness has been available since 1955, offering exact and reliable information on almost every field of study known to man. In fact, the fields have grown so diverse that the Videogame Edition of Guinness is only the first of many field-specific books to come. |

Take THAT, Los Angeles! Over at the sunny land of Mexico, the local Xbox 360 team decided to try to add their names in the Guinness Book of World Records by making the world's hugest, biggest, most ginormous, and oversized pinata - in the form of Viva Pinata's Horstachio, of course. The pinata was built at Six Flags in Mexico, and the world's tallest pinata horse ended up being 45 feet tall (a full 10 feet taller than LA's version), weighing 4,400 pounds. In the mean time, the Guinness folks are yet to declare, that yes, this does take the cake for being the world's biggest multi-colored horse effigy. The makers are pretty confident about their feat though, and are sure that the announcement will come soon enough It is unknown whether this giant pinata is actually filled with candy. Meanwhile, conspiracy theorists have been suggesting that this may actually be a Trojan Horstachio which Microsoft will send over to Sony. They are also speculating that another (not as huge) Macaraccoon is also under construction and is due to be sent to the gates of the Nintendo headquarters. And yeah, we were kidding about the whole Trojan Horstachio thing. Thanks to badam for the tip! |

Arcade gaming legend Doris Self, the world’s oldest video game competitor/junkie/advocate, has passed on due to injuries suffered in an automobile accident in Plantation, Florida on October 3, 2006 .Not familiar with who Ma’am Self is? Well, according to the Twin Galaxies' Official Video Game & Pinball Book of World Records, Doris was the oldest person to actively pursue video game world records, competing against gamers one-quarter her age. In fact she still remained as Twin Galaxies’ record holder for oldest champion until 2003, when John Lawton of Weirs Beach, NH, age 72, broke the world record on the classic Depth Charge. So before you get all snooty and go "pfft who cares," much the same way some people have brushed aside this other gaming senior's achievements, take note that Doris' records were relevant since the early 80s until 2003. Can you say the same about your Gamerscore? She first gained fame in 1983 when she achieved a world record score of 1,112,300 points on the classic arcade game Q*Bert during Twin Galaxies' 1983 Video Game Masters Tournament, an event that was conducted for the Guinness Book of World Records. In an interview at Boston.com News around early June last year, Doris said that during her time in the arcades back in the early 80’s, the gamers there welcomed her. She even says that it “got to the point where they'd trick kids to play against me." Ah, the magic of the old arcade. To Doris, gaming was therapy. Ann Ennis, Doris' sister, says that Doris would play Q*Bert five nights a week. The gaming would regularly happen around 1-3 a.m. as an alternative to taking pills for sleeping. Ann says that on the last night of Doris’ life, it was no different. Ann Ennis heard Doris playing for hours, practicing into the night. A gamer until the end. We wish you well Doris, may you find peace in the big penny-arcade up in the sky. |
